Clutch Failed Instantly

Recommended Posts

Dave G

just wondered if any one else has had the same as i have had with my gti recently.

The car was driving fine, no issues what so ever.

Didnt use the car for a couple of days and when i did come to use it i startd the car in gear with the clutch down and it nearly went through the gf's car behind. tried starting it in neutral which was fine but could select any gear but had drive when starting the car in every gear etc.

I checked clutch cable but thats fine

wiped the box out in record time expecting to find the bearin through the cover but all fine, infact clutch look like new.

Had that problem once. Turned out that the cluth and flywheel had stuck together because of rust. Wasnt possible to see until we took the actual clutch off.

When you checked the clutch cable did you check it hadn't it wound out?

Get some one to press the clutch pedal while you watch the clutch arm on the gearbox, I know it sounds obvious but just double check it moves correctly and the cable hasn't stretched as mentioned above.

my brothers white 1.6 gti did this and it was a cause that friction plate had seized onto the flywheel. to sort it i bump started the car in first, and while driving at about 5mph i would very sharply put the power on and off while the clutch is depressed. this "shocked" it lose, then i sat for 4-5mins with the clutch on the bite, giving it about 2500 rpm to try and clean the friction surface up a little,

As i said a bit of a bodge but goit things lose!

Paul.

I've had this happen before with other vehicles, just push the clutch in and give it a good rev from tickover. No need to take the gearbox out.

Excellent advice now the box is off the car!

never mind, i can think of alot worse vehicle to work on, box was out in 35 minutes on the floor although i did this with the shafts still in the hub as my 36mm socket was at work which would of put a few more minutes on it. just got to do a boot on n/s drive shaft in the morning but as it sits its all cured till the next thing.

i would say that more than anything, clutch dosent look very old at all, the flywheel did have some rust staining but it dosent now after a good clean up and wipe down. shame i need the car back fo work tomorrow or i would hav done the clutch arm bushes and given the box and better clean down.

be very careful changing the bushes! there are white and yellow ones, get the right ones. the offset is very slightly different and it'll toast your CRB in no time

I once had a similar problem with an AX GT

I sprayed loads of brake cleaner into the hole in the Bell Housing and that seemed to sort it after starting the car in gear with the starter motor
