Nasty Noise

Recommended Posts

leon 1.9

Thought the driveshaft on my car (Gentry with a gti6 engine and 1.9 box) was going as there was a speed related scrapping/ grinding noise while moving, not affected by if the clutch was in or not, or by engine speed/ revs.

Anyway, with her up on axle stands, I started her up and popped it in gear. It seemed that the noise is coming from inside the gearbox end cover.

I've had a search but can't find any similar faults.

While at it I've found the gearbox oil drain plug is in far too tight and I've rounded it trying to get it loose. Its got a square section inside the plug head, but this is obstructed by the subframe. Do you need to jack up the engine and slacken the mounts to get at it with a square socket? :)

The bottom arm pinch bolt also seems jammed, I've given it a few good wacks but it's not moving easy, any tips? I've had to spray it with WD (after bagging up the brake disc) and leave for now. Is it just a case of keep trying?

Get the feeling I'm going to need a new gearbox soon anyway, in which case it'll all be coming apart.

Take the end cover off and have a look , the nut on the saft might be loose , Are you having any diffiucly getting gears as well ?

No selecting gears has been fine, no crunching or extra resistance.

The noise sounded worse when I ran it up on stands, sounded disturbingly like there was something 'rattling' around inside.

Wasn't sure whether the end cover secured anything in place, plus after headbutting the gearbox trying to get the drain plug free yesterday (in the rain), I was too wound up to do anything more :) .

Loosen the gearbox mount a bit (the one beneath the battery) , and move the box down and up the front side of the car , in order to gain some more clearance for working around the drain nut .. then , if you have square socket attachment use that , if not try with 12 point 21mm socket (but don't pull the handle , with one hand grab on the socket/nut side tightly and with another bang a few times sharpish with closed fist on the socket handle .. or try with impact gun if you gave one ..) if 21mm socket option fails (if you round the nut off again) take 20mm one and bang it on over the nut with a hammer ..

Like said , if the noise comes from the fifth gear cover could be loosen shaft nut or even broken gear teeth playing around inside !

If it's fine there , check diff bearings .
