205 Mi16 To Gti6 Conversion Advice Required...

Recommended Posts

Guest bella_d

Evening chaps,

I'm currently investigating swapping over the engine in my 205 from an mi16 to a gti6.

I want to change for a few reasons but primarily the alloy mi's I have run in the past never seem to last more than 25-30k between rebuilds. Swinging the engine every couple of years is starting to get a bit tedious! Unsurprisingly this time I have spun a big end so it's time to do it all again!

What parts (besides the engine/engine management/loom) would need to change to go from mi16 to gti6?

Points I'm giving consideration to at the moment are as follows:

  1. Are my current mi16 engine mounts and exhaust manifold adequate? Is the gti6 angled in the same way as the mi? Are the exhaust ports the same? Is the manifold bolt pattern the same? etc..

  1. Will a be3 box fit or is it 6 speed box only? If so does this affect drive shafts etc.?

  1. Is a shortened inlet manifold required?

There seems to be a lot more reasonably priced and lower mileage gti 6 engines available as I guess the mi16 is getting rarer and rarer.. Which is further winning me over to the idea of upgrading to a slightly more modern engine.

If anyone has any experience / comments / useful links I'd greatly appreciate the info.

Cheers

Kev

Just type "gti6 conversion" into the search (including the speech marks) and you find everything you need

Really? Aren't most threads 8v to GTi6?

doesn't really matter what you start with, unless its swapping from a 6 lump to another 6 lump. apart from most of the cooling system you need to start afresh with the downpipe/exhaust manifold engine mounts wiring etc.

as welshpug says, everything to do with the mi bar your main coolant hoses will need removing

then there's many ways of doing it

angle the engine, or angle the 6's 4 branch

gearbox is up to you, i've got a be3 1.6 box on mine, you'll need an mi16 clutch though (alloy block one) 6 box will go on but it limits the lock when turning right, also you need a lift up reverse gear stick and cable, i'm sure you need to modify a drive shaft as well but not 100% sure on that

there's loads of ways to do the cooling

wiring loom, there should be a thread on here for it

I dont see why they're irrelevant, they tell you how to put a gti6 engine into a 205 which is what your doing.

The fact that its got an mi16 in at the moment doesnt really matter as that all needs to come out anyway :D

FYI the iron block is ~12mm taller, which is why you may have downpipe clearance issues, hence needing either a proper manifold (as the Mi one won't fit) and/or mods to the bulkhead. Reangling the engine is not a good idea due to cam cover:MC clearance issues or potential driveshaft strain, although you can use an RS2000 offside rubber engine mount to lower it slightly.

Naturally you'll need the new ECU and loom as the loom has different connections, e.g. no AFM.

You must be doing something serious to be killing Mi engines in ~25-30k though. Don't be under the impression that the GTI lump is tougher because I don't believe it is. Phrases like 'chocolate pistons' are regularly used on here, and I just had a valve head fall off which I believe too is not uncommon.

I'd stay Mi personally, and just build it tougher. Standard ones get to 60k surely before needing a cambelt change for peace of mind. Why are yours dying in half the time? If it's pure track work, then perhaps what you're getting between builds is quite good. If it's just road work, then I'd say something's amiss.

I went from Mi16 to Gti6 and the only bits that stayed were the altenator mount, bottom hose and gearbox inc clutch(I put a new clutch on but is an 1.9 mi one)

As said just look at other conversions as you really are starting from scratch.
