Tu3 Alloy And Iron Engine Blocks

Recommended Posts

jonnygoodhand

Ive been trying to determine which TU3 engines have which blocks. From memory, I've drawn up the list below:

205 XS ALLOY

205 GT ALLOY

205 Rallye (UK) IRON

AX GT ALLOY

AX GTI IRON

106 XSI IRON

From the above, it would seem that Peugeot moved over to the iron block when they introduced fuel injection. However, I have read a few times that a version of the 106 XSI sold on the Continent was Alloy and also that the 205 GTX was Alloy. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, what's the easist way to check if the engine you're looking at is Alloy or Iron blocked? I've heard people say that the dipstick is on the right for iron blocks, but my Rallye's was on the left.

Yep - Magnet is the obvious, but colour is a good starting point as the iron blocks were painted - presumably to reduce corrosion.

The dipstick can go either way and depends on what car the engine was fitted to in the first place.

Anything before 1992 will be an Aluminium block. The Iron Block 1.4 was introduced sometime late 1991\early 1992 if memory serves, with the twin choke Solex carb and 75bhp. (TU3-2)

I'll try and dig out my French RTAI manual as that explains it pretty well.

As far as I know, they went back to producing aluminium 1.4 blocks for the SPi 106, 306, 205, 206 etc and iron was then used for the MPi big valve units. It just seems to be around 1991 - 1993 there is a bit of a grey area with the carb'd models.
