Top Engine Mounting Problem

Recommended Posts

mark.r

Hi, all. I'm fitting a Xantia VSX engine into my 309 and I am having trouble with the drivers side top mounting. I have used the mounting arm from a 306 XSi but the engine is sitting very high and too far back. Not so much a tight fit for the master cylinder, more that there isn' room for it at all! Any ideas please.

that would be the same as the xsi arm if both are iron block

Yeah the XSi arm would seem to be the same as S16, GTi6 and Xantia, but is the rubber mounting always the same height. My cam cover is at about the same height as the strut tower. I reckon it needs lowering about 1.5 inches/30mm. I could fabricate a mounting arm but I dont feel I should need to and any way I could be just creating problems for later.

Guess nobody else has had this problem then. Anyone know exactly how much shorter the RS 2000 mounting is? I presume we are talking mk 2 RS, as the mk1 would be an imperial thread?

It's quite common as the engine is taller than the alloy blocks, Allot of people cut into the cam covers or don;t run them but it's all down to each car, The last one I did with this engine had loads of clearance

Thanks Miles. Its just that being a car body repairer, I know the production tolerances where in the region of 5 to 10 mm. Now as far as i can see, I would need to find a good 30mm extra clearance just to be able to fit my master cylinder!! I think Ill drop the lower mounting off again and lever stuff about. If that does not work, its fabrication time.
