6 Speed G/box Conversion

Recommended Posts

aCe

Hey guys,

at the final stages of my conversion and am a little concerned as when i topped up the g/box oil the n/s (short) driveshaft seal started leaking. I investigated and found that it looks as the shaft is sitting 5mm out from where it used to on the BE1 1.6 box i had before.

The other side has seated correctly so i measured the distance from the seal to the centre of the diff and its less than the old g/box. So what do i do? do i need diffent seals, diff?

P.S i have tried to force it in and bang but that is not happening?

i think you need to use the inner end from the 6 shaft mate. that or some people cut 5mm off the end of the standard shaft

that would make sense to use the inner joint i guess, is this a definite then?

Are all 306 joints the same

Miles

Either swap the Diff for the older BE type or find a BE inner shaft and swap over.

I never had any issues with a 1.9 driveshaft but the oil seal needed to be slightly sticking out of the dif casing, ie not sitting flush...

That was with a 1.9 driveshaft..

i take it there is a differnec in BE1 and BE3 N/S driveshaft inner joints then?

is this the case for just the short one or both?

The late BE3 or BE4 box's as found in 306's & 406's etc use a revised Diff and hense the inner shaft being shorter and the earlier shafts won;t fit as they are too long

Early BE3 and all BE1's use the same shafts and diff

I ran a 6 speed box back in around 2003 coupled to my mi lump and std 1600 driveshafts. Had no problem at all.

I now run a late xsara VTS box in my latest 205, again, no problems at all. Obviously you used new driveshaft oil seals in there?

This is a strange one as some people on here do seem to suffer problems and some (including myself, taylorspug and everyone else I know to run one of these later boxes) dont.

you all run LSD's don't you though? the difference is the diff as Miles mentioned.

Yes new seals but they can't seal as the seated part on the shaft sticks out to far.

Mine is a BE1 1.6 i think thats why i had problems, so i'm off to the breakers on sat to start stripping a few shafts to have a look

Nope. Std VTS diff.

As said the later Diff is different, The inner shaft is the same as the ZF ones which Pug Sport sold for around £1000.00 from memory

I guess it's the make of the recon shafts which makes a differance to some fitting and some not, I just checked the VTS box I have at the workshop and the same thing, The shaft doesn;t seal.

Maxi, Why on Earth are you running a std Diff with the power you've got

Because id rather it broke traction than break a shaft or any other part of the drivetrain. Although, having said that, with the 888's on, on a dry day, it hardly wheelspins.

I might upgrade to an LSD at some point but its not at the top of my shopping list.
