Stdt Has Died And Wont Start

Recommended Posts

Tandoh

Right ok. After spending the whole of yesterday working on the Rallye my STDT has now died

So what happened was i went to move the car, took a while to start. Then it kept stalling but eventually got it where i wanted it. I then went to turn it off, and realised it was still running, even after i took out the keys. I sort of sat there for about 2 minutes and it didnt stop. So i put the keys back in and moved it again. It still didnt turn off but after about 15 seconds it stalled.

I then took it for a drive around the block and it stalled on me at a junction, but started again.

I took it for a longer drive and then i could notice there was a serious power drop. It was as if i had no turbo on the car what so ever. When i came up to the next junction the car cut out and then wouldnt start.

Ive left it for about 16 hours but it still wont start.

The fuel pump would appear to be working and the cam is going around.

The car usually runs fine except for a quite a bit of white somoke when cold.

Im really confused by this one and i hope someone can help.

If there is anyone willing to take a look who lives in the wincanton - blandfold area i would appreciate it ! =]

Cheers

sounds like a dying/dead stop solenoid, I'd check that first of all, then the fuel feed and leakoff/return piping.

how many miles does it have on it?

Its got 118000 on the clock, quite high but not for a diesel

The not turning off suggest a faulty stop solenoid to me, it's the brass thing in the top of the fuel pump with a ring connector and wire coming out.

Should be able to source one for about £10-15.

Has it got plenty of Diesel in? Sounds like there is air in the system. Try pumping the button on the top of the fuel filter until there is resistance on it, then give it another go.

As above, wirth it not switching off on the key my money is on the pump stop solenoid. My old white diesel did this & that was the cause.

Worst case is the glow plug relay because afaik this also controls the stop solenoid.

A new solenoid is under £20 iirc so no big wallet damage & about a 10 minute job to swap max.

With regards to it stalling & not restarting, the rubber fuel hoses might be starting to break up allowing air in. My old STDT did this & it stumped me for a day or two but symptoms were similar to what you describe when its running.

not sure if this will work but it should.

if you put a permanent feed to the solenoid from the battery. if your problems are cured then the solenoid is your problem if not then maybe the relay or wires to + from it.

could someone please confirm this is correct?

we use this method on mini-busses when they cut out. so it is not forced to be the same but i expect it will be.

They aren't the pipes I mean Jimi, I'm on about the main fuel feed pipe from the metal hose / fuel heater on the back of the engine to the fuel filter which went on mine.

That does work but if you turn the ignition on but don't start the engine you can sometimes hear the solenoid click open. If you have a second person to hand you can put a finger on the solenoid & feel it move when switched on.

They were the problem on mine, as well as the ones at the back.

Ok i have replaced the stop solenoid and it starts!!!

But there is still no power and it still stalls. Ive had a quick inspection of the pipes but i think i may have found a problem. I was using the plunger thingy to get rid of any air bubble, then the diesel started coming out from around the plunger itself!

Is this meant to happen??

No, the priming pump seal can fail & it sounds like yours has.

This was suggested to me when my STDT stopped & after pricing a replacement cap up I swapped it all over to the later fuel filter set up from a 306 because it was much cheaper but this was before i'd discovered the fuel feed puipes were split on mine.

I need to change the fuel filter anyway so i will get that out the was at the same time.

How much was the 306 setup you mentioned and where could i get one.

you'd get it from a scrapyard so however much they'd see fit to charge you, it replaces the whole thermostat housing and does away with the metal canister filter and priming button, I think the routing of the hoses is different as they all come up and over on the right hand engine mounting side.

Hmm seems like it might be easier to get the cap as i get scared when using stuff from other cars lol

Anyone know the peugeot part no. or somewhere cheaper to get it?

I got my 306 style fuel filter set up from a scrapyard & iirc paid £20 for the whole thing.

Picture here

New fuel filters for this set up are only a couple of quid & dead easy to swap.

The topic from when I had my problem is here

I can't remember what the correct filter housing loks like now but iirc it was a Pug only part when I needed one.

All the parts you need from a donor 306 are mentioned in my topic & you can easily replace the one part that might cause problems (fuel filter).

id sugest swaping to 306 set up as well.

but when you do. use some instant gasket on the plastic housing at the botom where it sits against the cast bit. as its a known spot for air leaks.

i have the bits if you want them. pm me.
