Dropping Out Of 5th Gear...

Recommended Posts

Dayve

Hi guys,

My 1.4 Cj has decided it no longer wants a 5th gear. All the other gears seem to go in fine and pull okay. However my 5th has just started to go in, but then pop out straight after.

Is this the end of my gearbox?

or do you reckon its a smaller problem?

Any help would be ace!

Have you solved it yet, only mine was the other thread. All linkages are fine, nothing loose, no engine movement. All other gears are fine, just jumps out of 5th on very light/neutral throttles,

I need to pull the cover off but it rained today and i'm a wuss and afraid of rain!

I have another thing for you to check.

There is one rubber-bush thingy, there the inner metal-sleeve corrodes onto the lever - if you get it into gear, the metal-sleeve wont turn on the lever and thus the rubber part sets the lever on tension. If you then have slight engine movement or a pot-hole in the street, the gear just gets pulled out.

I had this on 3 different TU equipped 205s

try if you can get the bugger of the lever - if its not that easy its corroded - replace with new item or do what I did - when I ripped it of the rubberpart got destroyed and the metalsleeve still stuck to the lever - I just refitted it with a bit of grease and everything went on fine.

even have a picture for you.

Check the oil level in the box.

I don't have that joint Gentrix as mine are all rosejointed (and free to move)

Box oil was drained last week as I had the front struts off (and hence NSF shaft out). 2 ltrs (more or less, maybe 1.9!) came out and 2 ltrs went back in, so I happy it's not the oil.

Really I'm just hoping the answer will come via my nice clean laptop instead of getting grubby pulling the end cover off the box!

often the symptoms u are describing are worn gear.... (not where the gear run on each other) but where the hub slots over the gear.... but this is more often in like say 2nd gear which is used alot more??
