Expansion Tank

Hi !

As above , should it need just a little topping up sometimes ?

I havent been checking my exp. bottle level for a bit long time like say 6months or could be even longer , a full 1 year ?! ;)

.. yesterday , during the driving , the coolant level (not the stop light) warning light started to flicker so i pull over and took a look inside the bottle , and yes , the level dropped a bit so i had to top it up with the approx 0.5l ..

Today , went for a spin around the town , cheked the coolant level prior and after the drive and it didn't drop a bit ..

Coolant temp is always around 80 C mark (in stop/go traffic regime goes up to 85maxi) , fan is working , no white exhaust smoke , no obvious external leaks (pipes , rad , head to block joint , water pump , heater matrix etc.) , no internal leaks (at least me thinks so) spark plugs are nice brownish and dry as well as cylinders (checked them with the flashlight trough spark plug holes on hot and cold engine) , though exp. bottle is a bit oldish but the pressure cap is new ..

Could this be just evaporation kinda issue ? ( it's really hot over here during the summer season ! 453498550250b427a86d1c416c10483377494e9.gif )

Thanks !

I had an expansion tank crack on track once, the first we knew of it was when the horn started sounding on left handers, it was caused by a jet of coolant spraying into the relay!

Of course this was the designed flaw in the tank activating the Peugeot "engines-about-to-s*it-itself" audible warning......

Ahh, so thats why the actual coolant level warning sensor is so badly made, its fully redundant...

Well , luckily my coolant level warning sender works :) , and it's prove to be invaluable item :( if it didn't work id be driving along without knowing that im low on coolant until the -> :) ..

Bloody exp. bottle had hairline crack down on the bottom around the lower pipe outlet , didn't notice it until i removed the bottle out and had a good look at it ..
