Camshaft Question

Recommended Posts

Daviewonder

Hi all, Ive fitted a new camshaft to my 2.0 8v engine and when i reassembled everything i noticed that the cam pulley was sitting further out from the head than normal so I gave it a little tap with a rubber hammer and it moved to where it should be. Is this normal for the cam not to have something stopping it from moving from side to side? I suppose it could be called 'end float', should it have some sort of thrust washers or something?

please help

No, it isn' t normal  . In the 1.9 8v there is a thrust plate, under the camshaft cover towards the camshaft sprocket. I think it should also be in 2.0 engine. Did you put it back right?

Im sure I put it back together right, what could I have done wrong in order for this to happen?

From memory Im sure I experienced this on my 2.0 8v, I just made sure that it was centred with each bearing cap before I put the belt back on.

No cause for alarm

Pretty sure they're supposed to have a thrust washer in there, I know the 1.9 and 1.6 8V do. Otherwise you're going to have problems if the cam is free to move side to side. From memory the washer is about 4mm thick, and that's way too much endfloat without it! I'd take the rocker cover back off and check.

It should bolt on to bearing cap 5 (far left) in that pic. Its a C-shaped plate with a bolt hole in it.

that's only in VERY early xu heads/cams, circa 1986 IIRC.

Are you sure? Just about every 1.9L I've seen has a thrust plate. It doesn't matter which method you use, but it has to be controlled somehow. So if your cam doesn't have thrust control on the dizzy end, you'll need to add the plate.

All 3 of my 8V engines have had it too; 1992 1.9, 1991 1.6 and 1989 1.6.

The head on my car currently (F reg) has a thrush washer too.

Haynes covers this in the Workshop Maunal in the suplement revsions section.

IIRC the thrust plate isn't required on the later engines (my J plate doesn't have one)

I can't remember exactly but I think one of the Cam bearing caps controls endfloat in the later design.

A quick look on Servicebox suggests that the thrust washer was only used upto 1987 and not present on later models. Certainly the two 8v heads that I've stripped recently (both from Phase 2 models) did not have the thrust washer present

You can get a cream for that you know...

yeah that's about the age I've interpreted it to be, having looked at a few different heads a mate had all from early 1987 115bhp 1.6's

the change was at the same time as the pulley bolt was changed from 12mm x 1.25 to normal M10 and from a pin to a keyway+slot in the cam.

I had a quick look tonight and it appears that the cam I took out had a raised section on it that butted up against the cap on the coilpack side where as the new one I fitted had a groove machined into it on the pulley end so looks like I need a thrust washer and bolt, luckily the cap already has a bolt hole in it (good old peugeot) :)

Thanks for all your help chaps, Im off to the wanted section. :(

Ah right, you've just got the wrong new camshaft then. Lucky its an easy fix, good old Peugeot not changing their designs.

Its a low comp 105 hp cam fitted to my 2.0 turbo engine so its the right camshaft but it fits differently :)

I bought it off Miles, this was the ad -

"I;ve got a cam from a 1.9 Low comp (105) Cam head/engine, good condtion £25.00 delivered."

This is the one thats good for the turbo engine isn't it?

unusual for it to be that type if it was, if that is the case I'd get in touch with Miles and see if he has the part in question.
