Rear Bearings Keep Coming Loose

Recommended Posts

iamjackiechan

hi

i have a 309 rear beam which i have converted to disc using the 1.9 gti stub axles (i think there called) and i read in a search that

they are smaller than the 309 ones but various people have said that they havent had problems with them coming loose.

but at the moment im continuosly tightening them up, and when they come loose its seriously loose, so much you can wobble the wheel

majorly while the car is on the ground.

any one else had this problem, whats the best way around it.

cheers will

how tight are you doing them and have you staked the nuts?

Have the stub axles gone in far enough and is the back of them ok. I had one pull through once from over tightening.

the stub axles look like they are sitting fine and i have staked the nuts.

i have done them up until the bearings dont feel loose and then a couple of miles later there

is mega wobble.

a friend of mine said that the bearings normally need to be over tightened to seat them and then

backed off.

is this true, if so that could be the problem

they certainly need more than just till there's no play and a little bit more! 180 LBFT or thereabouts from memory, check your haynes manual to be certain.

I think its more like 190Nm, 180lbft is 244Nm, which is a lot. Either way, they need to be a hell of a lot tighter than no play in the bearings!!

Yeah i agree when i fit bearings i always do them up tight then back it off a little and tighten according to haynes specs.

As you said it sort of sets the bearing into position.

If you have swapped stub axles you are supposed to give them an initial torque of over 200lbft (220lbft iirc) to make sure they are seated fully home & then re-torque them to the correct figure which I struggled to find yesterday but think should be 160lbft.

Graham.
