if memory serves me rightly (which it might not be doing - wait for conf.), the ball/socket thing that the lamps are secured with are threaded, so that you can adjust up/down and in/out. there's some sort of lever as well isn't there? for quick adjustments if towing, etc?

I take it you've done work on them since the last MOT?

I'd pop in the nearest friendly MOT garage and ask if they could check and adjust as necessary, make sure everything moves freely before you go though, and they'll be more inclined to do it for less, maybe some biscuits or beer tokens :)

Is your headlamp secured on both sides with the spring clips? Before you push them back into situ, there is as hengti said, a small lever a couple of inches long and on the end of it a small clip that needs to locate into the ball on the adjuster. It is fiddly, long fingers are a bonus. Then you can push the lamp home.

If the adjuster is moving freely it sounds like either the ball and socket is not connected or it has broken off.

engine killer

probably it's time for you to get a new pair of height adjuster.

left corrector - GBP24.6

right corrector - GBP24.6

my left one broke just a few days ago due to ageing.
