Cage Padding - Which Type And Where?

Recommended Posts

Masekwm

Hi :P

I've been advised that I really should have some kind of padding on my cage, it's the full Safety Devices one which goes through the dash with doorbars.

I've been googling and read about the difference in quality between FIA and none FIA padding. I was thinking:-

1. FIA quality stuff around the top of the door and bar across the windscreen

2. Non-FIA over door bars and in the bit which comes down and through the dash.

Would anyone suggest another way?

Keith

It all depends really what type of motorsport you are going to do. Anything in Ireland, and National and above in the Uk requires FIA padding, otherwise the other type is ok.

You only need to pad the cage where your body can come into contact with it......... along the top of the door, door bars, and maybe along the top of the screen.

The FIA padding is nearly as hard as the cage itself and also quite expensive.

The last time I bought the non-fia padding it was about £8 per metre length.

I co-drive in a Peugeot 206 Cup Car on Welsh Tarmac events and have the Non-FIA padding in the car, and we have'nt had any problems with scrutineering.

Strap yourself in and flail your arms about a bit, you'll find which bits you can touch and therefore need to pad. I can only touch the door bars and the top of the door so that's all I'll be padding when I come to race. :D

Remember its where your knees will hit too... its a bugger when you knee a piece of scaffolding let alone roll your car and hit your knee on a cage!

It's only a road car, odd track day, but I've seen my Mrs out cold in the back of a Ka where she smacked the exposed roof.

So non-fia stuff is ok?

I shall try the strap in test

Its your choice mate, many people use non-fia stuff as the fia stuff went up in spec and is now uber expensive.

You cant put a price on safety...

We use the normal non FIA stuff in the race car. The FIA stuff is actually quite hard, just its fire resistant.

To be honest would go with the normal stuff.
