New Piper Cam Followers

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Has anybody fitted these in a 205 GTI i tried tonight but they seem really tight. I didn't want to force them in as i cant see how i'll be able to get them out again to change the shims. I've still got the old ones in order and they look fine its just that Piper recommed fitting new ones with a new cam. Is there a problem in re-using the old ones?

Thanks Steve.

chuvit you need to oil the outside of the followers and when putting them make sure the follower is no cocked over at all. I would put them you should have no problem at all.

The reason there tight is because they are to standard tolerance, and the reason your other ones are free to get in and out is due to them been worn

Steve,

Get yourself one of these tools with the suction cups. They make removal of the cam followers a breeze.

8V cams are very soft. A worn bucket will destroy a lobe very quickly. There is a procedure for dressing lifters on my website. If they don't cleanup quickly however, get some more. I'm not sure I'd be looking for new aftermarket however, given the amount of XU9/XU10 engines laying around. You MUST also use a zinc additive as an assembly lube. Pour the remainder over the cam/buckets before you put the cam cover on. Something like Crane Break-In Lube or Compcams equivalent.

I use a magnet to lift them out.

Thanks for the replies.

When i tried them i covered them in the cam lube that came in the kit but the only way i can see to get them in is to force them. As i've still got to check the valve clearances and possibly have to get them out to change shims i'm really worried about doing this. I'll give it another go tonight and see what happens.

Thanks again.
