Mi16 Sump Spacer

Recommended Posts

24seven

i'm faced with 2 options at the moment regarding my mi16. I'm fitting an XU10 trap door sump, but I'm having difficulty getting hold of an extended pickup (needed at short notice unfortunately) so that I can retain the spacer. If I use an XU10 oil pump & sump without the spacer, am I running the risk of damaging the engine form losing the stiffening that the spacer provides? If so then I don't want to run without it, but the car's my daily driver and has been off the road for a month already, so I want to avoid it being out of action any longer than I have to.

Have you contacted PeterT about the extended pick up already? From memory mine came pretty quickly... but then I guess depends just how soon you need it.

If you're going to the extent of changing the pump/sump then I would go the whole hog and get the extended pickup too. I'm not 100% sure whether you're ok running without the spacer/stiffener... i'm sure it has been done before but I wouldn't recommend it.

And as you need it in a hurry, why don't you just find out from PeterT or his website (or anyone else in the know) about how much it needs extending by and whisk your pickup down to a friendly and capable TIG welder who'll extend yours for you in quick time?

From memory, the extension's not that much ~10-12mm.

Probably cost you beer tokens at best, or perhaps £30 for an hour's work. Worth it though, as you could get motoring quicker. :D

For a road going Mi doesn't seem to need it, there's several running about like that with no spacer plate on them. Alan_M for example who's done many laps of the ring with no issues.

Only when you start going silly on the power output's it's really needed, A std engine will be fine

I've PM'd & Emailed petert about his pickups and modified spacer as those would be ideal. Having thought it through it must be there for a good reason even in roadgoing trim, as it would have been much easier to manufacture the sump without one, plus I intend to do trackdays in the car so had better keep it.

Sarty, the extension needs to be drilled & tapped as well to be able to take the grating that goes over it so it's not as simply as knocking up my own and finding someone to weld it on, which I'd love to be able to do.

Its there to reduce block / crank flex, so there's the potential to lose some power without running one. It would be interesting to see a back to back test on the rollers, but like Miles I doubt it would make any noticeable difference on anything that isn't running silly power or rpm.

hmmm. we'll see. I should hopefully have the new engine coming Wednesday and then have everything done by Sunday (taking my mother's ashes to be scattered in her home town), though at this rate it may not come at all leaving me unable to attend.

well the thickness of the stiffener is the same thickness as the spacer to go on the pickup, makes sense!

I have the whole hog fitted to mine. I doubt the stiffener adds that much really. With a Gti6 sump and pump I think you'll be fine so long as the oil level never drops below max.

Remember to check bolt lengths properly if you go with out the stiffener, some bolt holes are blind and shorter than other. You could crack the block

I'd keep the spacer & use an extended pick-up.

I went about it slightly differently to Peter's extended body & made my own which seems to work fine.

Probably able to be made locally & quicker than having one sent from here in Oz.
