Cam + Crank Pulley Positions?

Recommended Posts

FinalD

Right well I'm now annoyed.

Looking at the crank and cam positions they seem right according to the book...but according to the hole in the lower timing cover it's wrong.

The book states I need the crank pulley timing hole at 12 o'clock and the cam one at 7 o'clock...this is how I set it up.

The lower timing cover I have is telling me I need the crank at between 10 and 11 o'clock. Which bloody position do I need it in?

I refuse to start it in case I blow the head up. I'm just getting more and more annoyed and to be honest am on the verge of saying 'sod it' and trying it.

Also something that does my nut in is Haynes saying you can release the timing belt spring tensioner whilst the engine is in the car...like hell you can there is no space between the wing and the end of the engine for that!

Crank positions is as in this pic...

Cam as in this pic...

Both as this pic...

Hehe. :D

Thing is in the block there are a few holes/dents I can use. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the end of the block minus the crank pulley.

There is one at 12, one slightly smaller one at 11ish and I think there was one at 1ish too, again, slightly smaller. I used 12 as that's what the book said and also that's where the 10mm dowel/drill bit (as said to use by book) fitted best.

This is why I'm confused about the hole in the lower timing belt cover, which is a 10mm hole.

the only hole the 10mm rod fits into is the one the timing belt cover lines up with.

Hmmm...think I'll remove the crank pulley and check where it is...safest. :D

Ok, got the crank pulley off.

This is where the lower belt cover has the hole for the crank...

And the cam is not lined up with the timing hole...nuts! Belt adjustment whilst engine is in the car is impossible from what I can see...which is nice as I've filled the engine with oil and coolant and don't want to drop any of it.

Quite glad I've not started it mind. :D

ratchet spanners and long fingers FTW :D

not sure quite how much space there is in the 8v, but I've seen them run, albeit badly, at a tooth out! so I think there's quite a bit more than the 16v engines.

It's ok, I manned up and did it.

Both crank and cam are now at the right positions. :D

Now though I have more fun...turn the ignition and i get a click and the tank pump runs...but nothing from the engine. :(

The crank pulley timing hole only lines up with one hole when the lower cover is fitted so you can't get it wrong imo unless you use the wrong hole in the pulley but then it won't take a 10mm bolt.

You haven't left the flywheel lock in or a bolt in either of the pulleys have you?

Graham.

If you spin the engine over by hand with no spark plugs in then you will know straight away as to weather your going to chew your head up.

Don't think so. Epic mistake it I have...but it should make some noise form the starter surely.

It turned over by hand fine with it being a couple of teeth out, hence not being sure and checking it all many times and finding out it was wrong.

I want to get it running today...but my brother has busted his 1.4 XR so I Have to fix that before I can crack on with the GTI as he needs his car working.

If the starter isn't even clicking, have you knocked the solenoid wire off?

If it isn't fitted then it won't click but when you release the sopring the fuel pump runs.

Turns out it was just a dirty connection on the solenoid...cleaned up and it runs now. :)
