Big End Bearings

so since my current mi16 has developed a knock (oil starvation no doubt), I'm going to replace the big end bearings on the replacement engine as a matter of course as I'm told its easy enough with the engine out (and it gives me an excuse to fit a '6 sump + extended pickup).

 

Basically what I'm asking is advice on where to supply the bearings/bolts etc from? Are the rod bolts stretch bolts that need replacing as well? I vaguely recall reading on here about the different materials bearings are made from and that OEM ones are a cheap material... Is this true? Once it's all apart I'll check the crankshaft and measure it to make sure it's all within tolerance etc.

Whilst you are at it, do the mains too, also inspect the oil pump, as if the old shells have failed the debris can get round to the oil pump and knacker it.

 

If you are in Sheffield I have used RES on Roman Ridge Ind Est lots of times, they are good. I would also recommend removing the crank, and get the machine shop to check it and polish the journals, and then supply the correct bearings to suit. The clearances are very very small and it is difficult to accurately measure the crank journals, even I find this hard, and I have the right sized mics to do it with.

cheers for the advice tom.

 

The replacement engine has done 100k miles, and though it hasn't been run for a while I'm assured by the seller (Baz) that he's kept it well and turned it over now and then, which I've no reason to doubt. The old knocking engine will get a full rebuild and tune up as part of a uni project over the next year or two, but having suffered oil surge failure once I want to give the "new" engine a good fighting chance. I'm hoping the crank won't be damaged, as I'm skint enough as it is and can't afford to get it worked on.

Rod bolts can be re used. Although standard new Peugeot replacements are not that dear.

Peugeot themselves are actually the cheapest place that I've found for bigend shells at the moment, believe it or not!

 

0606H1 - Big End Shells (std, complete set of 8) = £42.86 inc VAT

060737 - Conrod bolt (single) = £6.91 each, so £55.28 inc VAT

 

Rod bolts can be re used. Although standard new Peugeot replacements are not that dear.

Current price for the rod bolts above - they've gone up alot recently, as they used to be about £40 odd!

 

What torque setting would you / do you do them to when reusing Tom, as the standard book figure looks like a stretch figure to me (ie torque to x lbft and then angle tighten by y degrees) and I'm a bit wary having had a Mi rod bolt fail with catastrophic consequences...?

On my own engines I measure the length of the old ones, compare to the length of a new. All the ones I've checked have not stretched and have simply been loaded in the elastic range, so I've used them again at the standard torque+angle. My 1600 turbo is using standard re-used bolts. On an engine I build for someone else, or something that is going to be subject to high revs (sustained 7000+ regularly) I use new rod bolts.

If you want .3 oversize ones from Pug, they are around £85! But as Anthony said, I paid <£40 for some standard BE bearings.

South Wales Pistons charged me *I think* £37 for a set of new bearings, .3 oversized were about £10 more.
