Speedometer Randomly Dies?!

Recommended Posts

Bakes100

Hi Guys

Recently having an issue where the speedometer will randomly stop working, seems to be if i accelerate hard or go over a bumpy/rough surface quickly. As I slow down the needle will flick up again to the correct speed , at a similar speed to when it died....if that makes sense?

Anyone know what it could be? Is it likely to be at the gearbox end or in the clocks :)

Thanks

Stuart

Check that the speedo cable is firmly attached at the clocks end, pushed fully home into the speedo drive at the gearbox end (and held in place by the rubber pin thing) and that the speedo drive is bolted securely to the diff housing (one 10mm bolt IIRC)

Make sure it's fitted correctly at the gearbox end and that the split pin hasn;t come loose. Can be a pest to check especially if the exhaust is hot! If that doesn't solve it try swapping in a replacement cable as they do go done.

I used to have this problem on a mini of mine, it was where the plastic speedo drive was worn, sometimes it would 'catch' and work ok and other times it would just slip and barely work. Im not sure if it would be the same on a peugeot though?

Hmmm, this thread reminds me to include the speedometer cable on my shopping list before it goes obsolete. But I have found two cables available, first one is 6123C4 (long 890, except GTX) and the 2nd is 6123C5 (long 1100, except GTX). Which one shall I choose? I am assuming the long 890 is for left hand drive since the clock is closer to the gearbox and the long 1100 is for the right hand drive as it has longer distance from clock to gearbox. Can anyone confirm my assumption?

Thanks.

spot on  IIRC if you need/want a longer cable to route it away from the exhaust more than the original you can use a 405 item.

most likely issue with the speedo dying if the cable is inserted properly is the cogs in the speedo drive, wear in the diff bearings will move the plastic cogs about and wear them faster.
