IIRC it bolts on yes, but the oil and water way's don't match up. That's only the alloy block, not a clue about the iron

erroorrrrr.......

head bolts on fine, but there's no hole for the front tensioner, nowhere for 2 of the 5 front engine mounting bolts, no valve cutouts in the pistons, probably more.

wrong section too, its an XU engine not a TU :)

late model 8v blocks have the extra tensioner hole but quite frankly you might as well just find a complete mi16 engine and drop it straight in. Its a simpler job by a long way.

might be helpful to me if I ever decide to hillclimb my 309 with its 16v in. If its got an 8v block apparently it will stop it going in the sports libre class and remain in the more competitive class below-its a long way off that though lol :)

309 came with the 16v engine fitted as std so thats not a issue.

Where this water and oil way thing came from I never know, But who-ever it did come from I want to shoot them

My mate Rich had an Mi16 head he wanted to stick on his 8v last year, I can't remember which place it was, but we were told they didn't line up FACT. So that was obviously bollocks. I'll stop spouting off, sorry lads

:P

I agree. That's the trouble with the internet and forums. Somebody makes a post and it becomes an instant law. Mr Newton and Mr Ohm had to do a lot more work before their work was published. And thank goodness the internet wasn't around when Charles Darwin started theorizing.

The fact that an Mi16 and a 205 use the same head gasket must tell you something!

In summary though, the major problems are:

- RH engine mount (lack of bolts as already discussed)

- exhaust tensioner (can be overcome)

- dipstick hole (can be overcome)

Good thread this !

The only problem with the mi 309 was as you know it was lhd only. The clerks of the course know about this as do most competitors so it is a no no as far as regs are concerned as the block must remain as intended for that specific car. If the 16v head bolts straight to the 8v block with only little mods then that's great as heads and fuelling are free in the regs..

Now, where did I put all my interior bits! :)

could argue that your gti6 block was a 1.9 diesel block originally :)

Just say you converted it to RHD, I got away with running mine in various Mod champinships

DOH, I never even thought of that lol!!

Is there really no way of checking that the car was an original UK spec 1.9 8v 1988?

if the block only has to be the same could you not fit the pistons out of an mi16 to over come the cut out problems?

i dont know if the pistons are interchangeable but its just a thought,

Paul.

sounds like u have the same problems I have, the one engine regulation set by the msa is the biggest pain in the a$$!

can only run a block which was fitted as standard to that model

Its just causes so much more work and extra monies needed for conversions

I wanted to go down this route with the mi16 on the 8v block but its a lot harder for me being on an island with no decent machine shops or rolling roads to test

And I strongly disagree with "jus fit the mi16 or gti6 and tell em its standard, they'll never know" they might not know but YOU will and if you start doing well that's when questions start to be asked and u get found out and banned

Not worth it in my eyes

Good luck with whatever you go for

Cheers Wardy. The local hillclimb group take it very seriously. One of my very close friends runs a very competitive polo g40 and someone asked the marshals to ask him why he had a blanking plate fitted where the radio should be(amongst many other little bits)-turns out the radio was a delete option back in the day when you specced the car up from new!! It took him a couple of weeks to do all the little bits that the rest of the competitors had spotted and he came back and still continued to be fastest in class!!

Its a very tightly run group and if you are quicker than the historical quick people all sorts of fingers start to get pointed and questions asked so I Want to make sure mine is correct before I do anything. Its still a fair way off but forewarned is forearmed.

put it this way, last year i was over a second off the record and never noticed, this year (after a few mods ie Lowering and new tyres) the record is mine and ive heard questions have been asked and have noticed heads turning and more attention my way!! Its good when u can tell them the block is completely standard and the head only has a little work done to it and your beating Hyabusa powered Caterhams ) (they not very impressed)

Can't you just tell them that your mi16 block is a 8v block?

Its only takes for the club to do a little investigative work to find out that the Mi block has extra ribbing and a different rear mount!!

i know it saves a lot of hassle and you are simply gaining reliability through crank spray bars (i think) but they wont see it like that!!

I might even be able to hook you up with the chassis number of a 309GTi16 if you like.

Lol, its so much easier for them to just start finger waving rather than drive better though!

Love the chassis number idea guys but if I do it, I would like to stand proud in front my car back in the paddock knowing that i am unapproachable for any reg issues. I dont have the money to do anything properly yet but when I do I think I will have a look at the 8v block set up but with my Mi head.

Well done on the title Wardy, must be a nice feeling!
