Cooling System...

Recommended Posts

one-lady-owner

I'm gonna give my cooling system a bit of a revamp as I've noticed my radiator fan is not working so sitting in traffic is a little worrying (watching the coolant temp creep upward......) I'm gonna replace anything and everything really, I know my rad is in good nick, so no need for that, but I'm thinking tempswich for the fan, expansion tank cap, possible coolant temp sensor, I'm aiming for everything sorted and everything renewed that can be so I know it's in tip-top condition......

I'm after a suggestion of parts I may have overlooked as worth replacing basically!

probably nothing at all to worry about, 1.9's do tend to run very cold and the indicated temperature it creeps up to isn't at all dangerous to the engine.

Wish my 1.6 ran that cool...runs at 80 plus in this heat. So not much margin for me...& my rad fan has recently stopped coming on. Had same problem when I bought the car, & fault was simply corroded contacts on plug to thermoswitch on radiator....probably the same again after 5 odd years so have cleaned up contacts & await next traffic hold-up to see if that's fixed it.

Incidentally, I imagine setting is the same for your car, so slow speed fan should come on as water temperature needle crosses the slash on the gauge between 90 & 110...probably 100! Also, if you do get caught, it's always worth putting car ventilation control to fully hot & turning ventilation fan full on, & open the windows...you'll get hot, but this will slow or even stop rise in temperature.

could just turn the engine off....

Why dont you just run the car up while its at your house to test it? At least then if the fan doesn't cut in you can do something about it without getting stuck somewhere.

Whilst sitting at the drivethrough the other day it crept up to the red, the light came on and the stop light, luckily it came on just as i was driving away and after about 3 mins of driving at 30mph it was back down to about 80 degree's so I know my rad is doing it's job!! I've been sitting with the heating on since as I know the fan isn't working, but luckily I don't get stuck in traffic very often!

I have a dash with all the numbers printed on the instrument panel so luckily I know whats happening at what temp!! During normal running my car will happily sit at about 80 degrees (as it does now), which is roughly the temp my thermostat should open, and I'm pretty sure all is well, sitting in traffic it used to get to about 100-110 before the fan would come on and it would slowly drift back down to about 80..... but it has stopped that now, although I'm not sure my fan has ever worked fully as I see people on here referring to the full speed as like listening to a plane take off (ie. stupidly loud) but my fan has never been loud.

Having already done a search I've read all the stuff about methods of testing the fan, and where the switch is etc, so I know all that, but I've been through the mountain of paperwork and receipts my car came with and the only reference to any maintenance work on the cooling system is a flush and refill every couple of years, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to replace anything that might be worth replacing as a matter of course instead of a matter of need sometime later!

Maybe the cap on the radiator, Just under the slam panel. Mine is leaking badly at the moment and looks as though its the original one.

Early and late fan switches have different switching temps.

From memory late is around 97 deg C and the early ones approx 88 deg C.

Can confirm this as I have had cars with both types fitted and thought the late model was over heating but it just switches much later.

Think you did the right thing driving off....if you switch off, the engine will continue getting HOTTER before cooling down....so if it seems you'll be able to drive on, best to do that, otherwise obviously switching off the better of 2 evils.

Always found the slow speed fan cooled engine down well, never had fast speed come on, so imagine that only comes on in extremes...yes, quite noisy when tested!

Replies to others....See above re switching off...also the usual brown multiplug problem has returned, meaning car starts fine normally, but not (of course) when very hot. I have a wire rigged up from the solenoid to touch on battery positive, which always gets it going...but not a welcome procedure when you're blocking traffic. Have cleaned terminals (again....hate doing jobs twice, but that's life with these cars).

Re running up to temperature.....here in Germany V-Power is over €1.50 a litre, so an expensive luxury. It's generally hot so can be sure it'll get hot enough to see fairly soon anyway!

Well I've just spent a hour pulling plugs, cleaning connections and checking things, and as it happens, both my fans now work......

It's my own special brand of auto electrics, unplugging things and plugging them back in....... it always works!!

I have a funny feeling it was the contacts on the fan relay, they were looking a little corroded!!

Funnily enough I might just (fingers firmly crossed) have solved my ongoing cutting out problem, simply by pulling the earthing (yellow) plugs at the side of the radiator, squirting with contact cleaner & then pulling them on & off a number of times to clean contact surfaces.

Perhaps this is something we should all do from time to time amost as a servicing issue!

As with most of the Peugeot gauges, the water temp gauge is a guessometer at best, those of you with numbers on the gauge, don't kid yourself that the actual temperature actually correlates to that on the numbered gauge. My car runs at about 75 deg engine temp (according to the NTC ECU sensors, which are quite accurate) when the gauge indicates the second thick line, numbered as 90 on the pictures above.
