Washer Problems

Recommended Posts

PhilNW

Washers have stopped, when 12 v is applied direct at the pump no problems.

However only about 4 v is coming from the switch, earth is OK

Have checked the voltages at the switch, 2 wires have 12 v, 2 wires have the 4 volts, presumably this 4 v is getting to the pump

Not sure why or where the 4 v comes from, have not checked the switch yet

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

coroded wires will cause voltage drop.

your problems lie in the wires.

I had similar trouble last year, & as usual, the answer wasn't simple. In my case, I found it was dirty/slightly burnt contacts in the steering column switch. So...a lot of dismantling to get that off....& when you get it off.....you need to "unspring" the steel clips holding it together.

You need to be careful to do this slowly, ideally over a large white sheet, so that you can see where any bits come from as they emerge/pop out. From recollection, the contact strip in question is loose, but is covered by a fixed brass strip, which you will need to lever up carefully to release the loose contact. Clean the contact points with an INK rubber, then wipe with a clean cloth, & reassemble....you should be able to "re-clamp" the steel clips in place with a pair of small mole grips set carefully to compress the clips but not break the housing!

i have had a problem with the switch as well and took it apart and cleaned all the contacts in the swicth..... could be voltage drop thru resistance, do a resistance check???

checked everything with a multimeter earths ok, just cant explain why there is 4 v on wire to the pump with the switch removed, thought it might be crossed with something else

Have been through haynes wiring diagram but cant see what could be at fault that would give the 4 V, swapped the switch and the relay with old ones but no change

What voltages are used by the wipers for slow and fast speeds

Cheers

The stalk/switch seems to need rebuilding, got it to work but stopped again, needs a bit more work to get the adjustment right.

Still cannot explain why there is still 4 volts on the wiring though
