Fast Road / Track Car For My Mate

Recommended Posts

foreigner

I got 3 door auto shell with no rust at all and V5.

I have given it to my mate who would like to have track/road car for when not using his Porker.

Trying to do it on a budget.

I would appreciate any advice on what to use and how much it cost you. Just the personnal experience with the parts and cost.

1. Engine/box - obviously as big as possible

2. Suspension. - we going to go for rebuild rear beam from one of the people on here so It's that matter of the right shock and front springs

3. Brakes. -

4. Seats -

5. Cage -

It's not going to be show car so trim and stuff not important just the practical side of the car.

I am just trying to make the budget for him to see if he want to go this route as it took me long time to convert him to 205.

Thanx for any advice.

Please forgive my spelling and mistake.

With the auto shell if I'm not mistaken, you'll need to do something about the rear quarter panels which are different from a GTI, and so a GTI 205 or 309 rear beam won't fit without some modification or replacement with GTI versions.

As Omega said, how can we really recommend something such as a big engine if you want to do it on a budget?

Do you really want a budget cage when it could mean the difference between you/your mate's life or death?

I think you need to ask Mr Porker how much he's prepared to spend, and then work from there, perhaps getting the cage right as your first priority.

Just a random figure from me, I think you're looking at £3,000 plus, and still reckon that's on the conservative side and is based on the work/labour being done by you/him and not as a chargeable item.

It might be cheaper looking for a 205 that has already had all the work done to it?

Thanx guys for your replies.

I know it's difficult to recommned something or say this and that.

I just wanted items from personnal experience so I can put it all on together and come up with something reasonable.

So I think we'll just have a go and see.

So what engine is anyone prefered option ( please not replies about the string) and how much it cost them?

What is donour car easiest option ?

I've become very kean on 1.9 8v engines. Never die and very cheap! on a 1.6 box and flywheel.

Mate i really think you would be better off buying one thats allready been done, it will be alot cheaper and less hassle!!

They pop up on here often too. Whatever route you take i will echoe the cage comments ,if its going to be an out and out track car then your mates safety is paramount.. Good luck

Luke..

Just to elaborate a bit more (had to dash out)

I have a fairly well prep'd 205 for track use which has cost more than i'd like to have (read as money pit) it has cage, diff, suspension, engine, gearbox, etc....

A friend wanted to get out on track and having a fun but cheap toy car.

We sourced a 1.6 GTi with blown headgasket, swapped the engine for a good 1.9 engine, rebuilt the rear beam, fitted a De-Pas rack, 1.9 front brake calipers, serviced the rear drums, short shift and that was it, readey to go. for about £600 all up

Now in comparision my car was much more "track" like flat turn in, better handling, harness's cage etc.. but "Red" as it was known was about a million times more fun, comical std body roll, but that was probabaly where the fun was. Then on the road it was faster than mine on anything bumpier than a smooth A road as you could just plough on and have a laugh. The lack of cage was never an issue unless you're driving like you're at plank.

So in essence, I'd start off with just a good std car, refreshed suspension (solid beam mounts though) good engine, 1.6 box and flywheel, De-PAS rack quick shift and keep the interior then go have fun in it. Don't waste money and time building something you can't use to much (I lesson I've learnt late one)

I'd mirror James's comments. I often wish I'd have bought a done one. Mine sits there more often than not waiting for the large pile of parts I've aquired to be fitted. for piece of mind I know mine will be done properly and hopefully fairly reliable but it's getting to that point which is the drag.

I'm hugrly regretting not buying the ready to go westfield i was so tepmted by around a year or so back. I'd could have quite happily used that most weekends so the extra outlay would have been worth it.

The thing that stopped me was I wouldn't hve left it alone and would have started adding bits from later cars & making it more track biased so decided the pug was a cheaper option.

I only mention to use the auto shell because it's parked in ex manager garage for 2 years and I would like to move it from and also it's free.

Second reason is as I learned with my previous 1.6 / 1.9td gti that you change bascially all running parts ( arms, shocks, etc. ) so it would be better to start with those parts brand new.

I am concern about the cage.

In my car when on road I'd like to take my boys with me as they don't leave alone at all. I wondered if there is any reasonable cage that I could put two seats at back which I'll take out for track days.
