I would think that a picture of any BE3 box would do as they are the same fitment.

wrong there, there's pull type and push type.

a picture of the problem gearbox from the OP would help

Not on the alloy block 1.9 there isn't, they're all push afaik.

Taken from this article on the main website.

The pedal is sprung by the release bearing against the pressure plate afaik & nothing else.

Definitely sounds like a BE1 mechanism, quite likely for a roughly 30mm long rod to be missing between the lever that pivots on the gearbox and the clutch release lever itself.

it often falls out as there's meant to be a spring holding the clutch lever to the pivoting arm but is often missing so the pin falls out when the clutch cable is removed or snaps.

what bits do i need then?

is the BE1 the 1.6 box or the mi16 box?

Is it definately an Mi gearbox then?

Even if its a Be1 Mi gearbox I don't think they had the rod, the one I removed to replace a clutch on didn't have & iirc they all have the Be3 style clutch mechanisms.

it could be a 1.9 or 1.6 box, not an Mi16 one if it has the arm poking out of the bellhousing, but without a picture its hard to say what you'll need.

Mi16's I think like Graham says only have the release fork and arm on the top end of the shaft.

Yes all the Mi16 boxes, either BX or 405, BE1 or BE3, use the same BE3 style mechanism.

A Be1 can be either a 1.6, 1.9 or Mi but if it has the set up as shown below on the gearbox cable end you need the small rod item #2 but its not an Mi gearbox.

looks like this the little rod, as you can see lockwiring it in place stops you loosing it!
