Some Engine Wiring Help Please?

Recommended Posts

FinalD

Copying this from my work log as it'll probably get more views and help here than in there really.

The car is a D reg 8v 1.9 GTI stock engine, loom etc.

I'll get some better pictures tomorrow morning of the wires I'm trying to find homes for.

And asking for wiring help.

The wires/cables I removed I labelled, the ones my brother moved over 5 years ago...he didn't. This means I have to work out where wires go, I looked in the Haynes manual and where they do have engine wiring stuff it says 'see illustration' and has a photo at at obscure extreme close up angle that you can't work out what is what in them.

I have these few cables I'm wondering where they go...if they are not attached to engine/component please could you give me an idea as to what they get bolted onto/plug into...

Around the Alternator/oil filter area...

Around the battery tray/rear of gearbox area...

Any help with the trailing wires and plugs would be appreciated.

If you're in Bournemouth you're welcome to have a look at my car to work it out. Mine's ph2 though.

Ok, on the bottom screw that it's next to, yeah?

Unfortunately the car and I are in Devon.

Got more wires on though on the battery side, just two plugs left (I think)...

Can't see any corresponding plugs to go with them though...although I don't have all the engine bits in yet due to needing to sort the two lower wires out.

black 2 pin is the SAD, brown doesn't get plugged into anything as its an engine speed sensor purely for diagnostic purposes, for which the machinery has been outdated several times over!

if its a show car leave it there, if not, bin it

I'm lazy so it'll stay. :P

It's not a show car, it's an everyday toy. :D

Well...when working it will be.

Any ideas on the brownish wire next to the blue one by the alternator?

if its got a small ring connector on the end then I think it could only be an incorrectly routed oil temperature sender wire, it should go behind the engine.

tucked behind the dipstick tube and the rear engine mounting bracket to keep it safe, should have a black sleeve over it too.

Oil temp sender is around the back of the block and connected, it wasn't removed from the engine. B)

The little brown one runs alongside the blue one into the loom, after that I don't know where it goes as it's buried inside cable tidying stuff and tape.

As for the brown plug...I think I put the wrong onto onto the loom, as there are two, one connects to the oil temp sender and water ones, and the other goes into the back of the block and is a thick white cable. I did have the thick white one plugged in then I realised how am I going to get the oil temp and water temp things to work if they are a spare plug.

EDIT: Oh I just realised I read 205Rog incorrectly...starter not alternator.

Ring connections by alterntor

I have 2 wires on each...which as far as I know is right. One big ring for main power line, one spade for whatever...all linked up correctly...just those darn small rings. :S

Both of them?

I've got the large one connected up along with the spade connection too, as shown in this...

Looks to me as if someone has fitted a replacement solenoid wire to the starter ( the one currently connected looks much thicker than normal and should be blue ) the blue wire with ring connector is most likely the original starter solenoid wire , adapted for a pattern starter IMO and as a pure guess, the white one with ring connector is likely an addition for the same ailment as the present one is fitted.I'd insulate both and see if it turns over

Phase 1's did have extra wires connected to the Alt, So I'm 99% sure both get connected, Shame my CTi's 200 miles away or I could check

Right-o tomorrow I'll chuck 'em onto the Alt and reassemble everything else, if I have time, fill with fluids and try and start it...or fill with fluids and run screaming like a little girl as I'm too scared to start it in case I did something wrong. :)

I guess I should be putting them onto the screw thread that's right next to them on the Alt with the slight riser block on it? It looks of the same idea as the main connection to the Alt as opposed to bolts that hold it together.
