Tappety 1.9?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've finally got my 205 back on the road after a engine swap. My last engine was very tappety due to the head being scored and pitted due to lack of oil. I've checked the clearances and they seem fine, possibly the exhaust manifold needs nipping up again due to using non-genuine gaskets and have compressed slightly as it ticks more under low down accelarating.

Its been such a long time since I've heard another 205 Gti that it's hard to tell whats normal. It just seems noisy at idle and driving, not as bad as it was with the last engine as that had an annoying rythmic tick. I know it's not the most refined engine ever and my other car is a 406, so getting in the 205 after driving that really makes you aware how noisy it is.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

the ticking low down is probably pinking/detonation. I thought it was a gasket on mine for ages and kept trying to fix it. What fuel are you using?

Just normal unleaded. Ignition timing could be out (Possibly the reason for getting a bit warm), I doubt very much is the cause of the ticking but I'm sure it's not helping. With a stobe light the timing marks were no where to be seen.... It has the small metal plate for the timing mark and I can see the marks when its not running on the flywheel, but when running they don't line up even when moving the dizzy, or am I doing something wrong?

Mine has always pinked low down on anything less than 97ron, almost regardless of the distributor adjustment. My 1.6 makes the exact same noise

Thanks for the info, I'll stick some better fuel in. I've got another dizzy so i'll try that and tighten the exhaust manifold up see if that helps.

Thanks,

Dan
