So who's got a powerful competitive 8v modified engine..?

What specification would you recommend for rallying, without

going into silly money..?

If there is such a thing..? <_<

Cheers

Max

What's silly money?

I dream of a fairly simple L&B'd hi-comp. 285ish cam'd 1.6 on TB's for my rally car with circa 150bhp. Still would be a couple of £k though...

I did fancy the idea of going for a 1400 16v but soon realised

it was mega bucks..!

That's why I thought I'd stick with a competitive 8 valve motor..

So who's got one..?

I meant 1600 16v which is a factory engine, not 1400 which is a complete specialist build.

I know someone in my motorclub that's running a later 110 bhp version from a 205 XSi in his 205 with EFI management and a cupcar spec exhaust manifold for roughly 130 bhp, he's looking to install some cams quite soon to take it to 150 bhp+

That sounds interesting..! Which 16v head is he intending to use?

This sounds along the lines I was thinking of..

What sort of realistic bhp / torque limit is achievable with standard pistons and crank..?

Hi Welshpug,

I take it you mean a 106 XSi..?

If so, how much modification is required for fitting i.e. mounts etc..?

Cheers

Max

I think he means an engine out of a 206 xsi, they would be much the same engine as a 106 gti.

I am currently building an 8v 1600cc engine. It should produce around 180 bhp, but we wont know until it has been RR'd. We took it to a rolling road last sunday but it sprung a leak while mapping it (EFI management). Seems that the headgasket have now gone since its blowing all the water out through the expansion tank and getting too warm.

So how much modification is required then for fitting into a 205 i.e. mounts etc..?

The question is.. Ideally, If I'm trying to keep within a budget of less than £2000

Will I be best going down the 8 or 16 valve route for £££ / bhp..?

Cheers

Just noticed this thread Max, I'm actually building another engine for mine at the moment to a similar budget so give me a call if you need to know anything.

It's still at the machinists at the mo having the bottom end lightened and balanced with new pistons & liners (mine were too worn to reuse) and I have a worked head with rally cam to go on with twin webers, so hoping for around 140-150bhp when it's all up and running.

To fit the 206 xsi / 106 Gti engine and gearbox isn't a lot of work, just involves moving the gear linkage on the subframe I think and then the wiring obviously. I don't think the gearboxes on them are the best though and I think they're also heavier than the xu engine. I think costs would be similar in the end, although it's easier and cheaper to get more power out of the 16v.

So you're looking at doing the modifieds next year then?
