Yeah the only difference between a Ph2 8v coil and an Mi coil is that the Mi coil has a bracket built on to it to fit it to the side of the manifold.

If you have a later 8V with the coil on the inlet manifold then it will plug in and work but doesn't have the right bracket attached to it. If you have an earlier one with a cylindrical coil these still work but they don't plug straight in due to different connectors.

nice one, i thought that about the bracket thing, my gti is a late one with it bolted to the inlet so no problem, i only want to plug it on to see if its the coil pack that is causeing the clicky relay problem!!

Now it's interesting that you mention this. Can you please either PM me or update this topic with your findings?

I had a problem with my Mi cutting out and then refusing to start. I've not managed to track the problem as I've not had the multimeter to hand when it's happened. All I know is it wasn't injecting when it happened. Looking at my wiring schematic, the relays are obvious culprits, but I also wondered about the coil. The coil is a bit of an unknown to me as I bought it second hand and it's only done a handful of journeys.

could be a coil breaking down, as the 8 valve management relies on a signal from it to trigger the tachymetric relay and hence the power feed to the injectors and fuel pump.

on an Mi16 M1.3 (3 row IIRC) its controlled by the ECU (the switching of the relay), wire 36 switches to the ECU earth circuit when it see's crank signal I think and triggers the relays.

ML4.1 is a bit more straightforward and relies on a signal from the coil along wire 32 to trigger the feed to the injectors (I think wire 32 is live when a switched feed is provided down wire 2/2A), which in turn feeds the fuel pump relay, which is switched by the ecu when it see's crank again.

just a quick update, tried 2 coils from 8v, 1 known a defo good one and the other not sure, connected both up and same clicking!!!, anyone know if i would need to have everything connected up to make it "work" right i.e injectors/AFM/senders etc etc?? i've just got + and neg connected nd the mentioned coil and the CPS plus fuse box obv.
