Quaife Diff Questions

Recommended Posts

Saveit

Hi,

Do you guys hear som noise from a quaife diff when running the car? Cause i hear some noise from the gearbox when running. And when i let go of the throttle the wheels stop instantly, and there are some resistance when turning the wheels by hand. Do you guys also experience this or should i disassemble the gearbox to take a look at the diff?

And secondly, where do i find the connector for the coolant temp? Cause i got EFI fitted now instead of the original system and i cant seem to find the wire for the coolant temp meter?

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I have the ATB Quaife diff which has the same resistance as you describe.

With regards to the noise, when I changed to a 4.8 crown wheel and pinion,

it does make quite a whine..! which is normal I believe.

Well i think my diff is broken. There is so much resistance that i cant even push the car alone. And yes, it sounds terrible when driving. It just gets louder and louder. And its a standard gearbox...

Did you grind off the bits inside the diff housing where the quaife catches as it turns?

Nopes its fine. I think its ruined inside. Took the diff out and put it on the ground. Put my two driveshafts in either end and me and a friend tried turning them by hand. It was possible, but it was definitly resistant to turning and it felt as though something was "grinding" inside when turning.

Could it be my crown wheel? Cause i fitted a new gearbox since my other gearbox didnt have to mount for the CAS sensor. So i got hold of a new box with the CAS sensor mount. Could the crown wheel be different from the two gearboxes that is making this noise? Cause the diff worked as it should in the other gearbox? Can i change the crown wheel with the gearbox fitted - or do i really need to change the crown wheel at all?

did you replace the pinion to go with the different crown wheel?

Didnt replace anything. Not the pinion, not the crown wheel. Should i have done this? I dont even know what the crown wheel and pinion is, could you explain?

My money is on that.

Just called Quaife. THey assured me that nothing was wrong with the diff. They told me that it was the crown wheel and pinion. Could someone urgently tell me what to do?

The cog on the diff is the crownwheel, and the cog that turns it on the output shaft of the gearbox is the pinion.

The crownwheel and pinion need to be matched to each other (ie a 1.6 crownwheel and a 1.6 pinion) rather than mixing them up.

If you took the diff out of one gearbox, you should have used the crownwheel from the new gearbox.

If you are using a crownwheel from one gearbox and a pinion from another, the two gears won't mesh properly, leading to noise and excessive resistance, not to mention the potential for some odd gearing (as the combination of the two cogs gives the final drive ratio)

Ahhh so the crown wheel is replaceable on the diff?

Yes, just bolted in place. When you buy the diff new, there is no crownwheel in place - you remove it from your original open diff.

OKay. Didnt know as i removed the diff from the gearbox with the crownwheel in place. Well i have changed the crown wheel, and everything works perfect. BUT VisaGTI16v is right, you need to grind a bit inside since the diff is rubbing against the housing.

When fitting any lsd you should stick a shaft in and try turning it to ensure nothings catching inside before fitting everything back on else you will waste a lot of time and gearbox oil removing it all again heh. This is the bit I had to grind down

It was not that bit mine was hitting. It was the housing wall..

just on this subject, i fited a quaife to my 1.6 box and didnt grind anything down, should i have? no body told me this!! i sat the diff in before i bolted the cover on and from what i remember it turned ok and didnt sound like it caught on annything, is it a "noticeable" grind/catch?? by the way its a BE1 box. cheers

p.s is it easy enough to take out diff/check for this griding with engine and box in situ??

You bolt the cover on, stick a driveshaft in and rotate it. If you feel or hear any catching then you need to take the cover back off and look carefully for any marks where its been catching and go from there. In the Visa I was able to fit it with the alternator lifted up, lower engine mount removed and engine tilted forward, didnt need to remove the box.
