So what have you done? Is it fit a relay? If so how have you wired it.

I would take the output to the starter motor off then turn the key to crank and see if you can hear the realy clicking or better can you put a meter on it (or bulb)

I would also double check how you have fitted the relay  .

If you have wired it as per the post it should work.

relay is wired in fine as the post says, just disconected the starter feed and thre is no clicking tobe heard from the relay, does this lead me to believe that the relay is duff?

No you will only get the clicking when you remove the the coil wire (the blue one to pin 85).

removing the wire to the starter is just so you can test with out turning the engine over all the time.

If the relay is ok you will need to test the voltage on that blue wire that used to go to the starter motor but now goes to the relay.

You should only have voltage when the key is turned to the cranking position (position 3).

just re read the first post ;) , by the sounds of it the blue wire is staying live. Have you run a new wire from the brown plug under the dash?

If not I would have a look at the ing switch.

;) Any decent places to ride in Jersey?

Sounds like something mixed up on the ignition barrel, can't imagine it would matter being a CJ. You never know though

I would check that you are only getting a live out on the blue wire when you are turning the key to start the car. When you let it spring back the voltage should drop off.

nope none at all, i have a mate who lives in exerter so i normaly pop over and see him and we just hit spots near him, we have a skate park but its tiny, me and a few mates have benn working on some trails but there is only 3 of us digging so its taking its sweet time haha. welll back to the problem, im gonna get the reylay checked at work tomorrow to make sure its not that that broken, gonna borrow a multi meter from work as well so i can check the blue wire to make sure its not giving a constant feed after that im running out of ideas, only other thing i can thik of would be to fit a push button start as well.

If when you remove the blue wire from the relay the starter motor stops I would say the relay is ok and you are getting a feed all the time.

As for a multimeter just tape some wire to a bulb and job done.

just disconected the blue wire from the realy and plugged it into my build and when i turn the key to start the car the light comes on then goes of, so im not getting a constant feed fropm the blue wire, best to check the relay now then.

rite the realy is fine nothing wrong there i done a bit more testing, when the blue wire (45) is attached tothe realy when the key turns back to position 2 there is still power to it , so i take it this is my problem but i put a bulb on the blue wire and turn the key to position 3 then back to 2 the light come on then off. this is leaving me very confused now. if im getting a constant feed with the blue wire how come the starter wasn't going all the time before?

You may have a bad ing switch not disengaging fully. I.E. 9v not enough to engage the starter but will light the bulb.

It almost sounds like it's not a 'normal' switching relay. It sounds like you have the other type of relay that switches on when given a current and then stays in that position, and then needs to be supplied with a current again to switch off. But when I looked at relays on the VWP website, the relay that I'm talking about looked quite different.

rite i have got my hands on a multimeter adn tested the blue wire with this and its still reciving power when in position 2, im gonna try and get my hand on that hole new ing switch and plug in it and see if thats the problem if not well im well and truely out of idea, just have to go back to the clicking haha

The relay you want should be 12v (not 30 or 25) do you mean 30 amps, that would not make any difference.
