help needed..again...

The oil pressure gauge needle on my pug is danerously close to the red..where does the needle usually sit....it does vary occassionaly going up to almost the first mark after the red sectiion.. i do have a slight oil leak..coming from underneath the engine somewhere...will be investigated when car goes for service in a couple of weeks..what are the possible causes of the pressure readings and any urgent consequences??

Also have an occassional knocking sound from the front of the car when turning at slow speed...car has been lowered,, and speedlines fitted and its a non ps. model...bushes??

Thanks

If the pressure is low then the condition of your engine will suffer, severly in some cases. Id fix that leak as quick as possible as that can cause a drop in pressure.

The knocking you describe could be a driveshaft.

Mine used to do this when the sender for the gauge was on its way out, the gauge would drop right down to nothing but the oil pressure warning light wouldnt come on, as soon as i changed the sender the gauge worked fine. Does your oil pressure warning light come on?

nope..warning light has never come on..engine has been changed from a 1.6 to a 1.9 if that makes any difference

Imho i would say the knocking is probably a worn cv joint, i would also think that your low oil pressure isnt caused by the oil leak (it would have to be one hell of a leak to make your oil pressure that low!) if you can i would test the sender im sure the readings will be on here somewhere? failing that get your oil pressure checked when you get the car serviced.

ok...cheers for that...i have asked the mechanic to investigate the oil leak when he does the service...not a bad leak,, havent needed to top the oil up yet in 2 months or so...when i got this one it was over filled so im thinkn that could lead to the leak..

It might just be that the leak is from the oil pressure sender, either through the sender itself (more commonly a problem with the warning light switch), or it just needs tightening or a new sealing washer. In that case you would probably get a low reading without the pressure realy being that low.

have you checked your oil level? Light may be coming on due to low oil level from your leak

You mention your car has been lowered. Has it grounded over a speedbump or similar? The reason I'm asking is that the sump pan isn't terribly strong and if it's had a bash underneath then the pick-up for the oil pump might be squished so the pump isn't getting enough oil to pump to provide good pressure. It is a worst-case scenario but I clouted a rock on a rally bashing the sump pan (despite a thick guard), losing pressure (and the STOP warning light failed to come on) so am now in the midst of a full rebuild.
