Quick Question

I've nearly got the engine out on the Cti I'm restoring.

Did the 1.6 Cti on an F plate supposed to have an oil cooler or not?

I was wondering if it's been removed at some point.

Didn't think of that!

It's my first 1.6 I've took apart.

I Can't wait to get it finished, I'm aiming for finishing summer next year, but if things go smoothly and I get the funds for its respray I might have it done by this winter.

It's going to be mint. I'm taking pics as it progresses, so I'll post them all up when its done.

I can't decide to fit the Auto Bonnet I have spare to it or not though ;)

My 1.9 didn't come with a Oil cooler, what were they fitted to? Someone had messed around with mine, I'm not sure if someone removed it and put twin rad fans on it... Anyway, I've fitted one now, hopefully it will stop me having to have the heaters on full pelt in the summer months when stuck in traffic. I won't miss that!

Sorry to hijack your original post, but I have another question... What is the oil capacity with a oil cooler? Mines seems to be taking alot of oil to get it upto the max mark.

Thanks,

Dan

Oil cooler came from a sandwich plate off the oil filter actually - don't think any 205s had transmission coolers!

As far as oil capacity goes, the main page says the sump is 5 litres - but doesn't differentiate between 1.9's (with cooler) and 1.6's without.

Hmmm.

I'd guess there has got to be a good litre of oil in the cooler and oil lines on the 1.9, so about 6 litres in total I'd guess?

Well the oil has to obviously come from a sandwhich plate, the actual oil cooler radiator was on the gearbox.

Come on boy's, Early GTi's had a Air Oil Cooler mounted in the spare fan hole, Late 1.9's from around 1992 had a heat exchanger (Oil heater) mounted on the gearbox with a remote oil filter too.

No 1.6's or low power 1.9's had anything, Auto's have a heat exchanger too

I thought the oil cooler was located in the 2nd hole in the fan cowling? Well thats where mine is at the moment and it had the correct mounting point for it.... I've put 6 ltr in, I think it needs another 500ml.

I always thought the remote water cooled oil cooler mounted to the gearbox was used when the car had power steering, as the air cooled small radiator ones clash with the PAS pump mounting bracket where the sandwich plate meets the block.

I could be wrong though! :)

I found that the air cooled one wouldn't fit by trying to replace my broken leaking water cooled one.

I ended up taking it off as it does F**k all IMO!

Yeah mine needs 5 ltr without the oil cooler. Pain in the Ass as 1 Gallon is about 4.5 Ltr. so you have to buy 2.

Comes in handy though if it needs topping up.

It's a mith they fitted to P/S model's, All late car's had the remote one unless modded along the way as allot did due to broken mounting's, Easy to remove and just fit a oil filter and top hose.
