God Damn Mot Testers!

Recommended Posts

MrG

since I had the mot done in April, the car felt a little underwhelmed. Before at Marham and Snetterton it was very quick etc however after the mot and a visit to Snett again it felt a little flat, and at Marham/Cadwell etc it wouldn't idle and didn't feel the same as before.

I had a word with the garage and they did say the margins for the emissions were very close and they had to play with it to get the readings right (where as before they did it I said not to touch my carbs!).

Anyhow as I'm due back at Cadwell next week I thought I'd best service it and give it a run to ensure the misfire had been cured, and again it wouldn't idle properly (although it did, at 1800rpm) and it wasn't happy, anyhow today I had it back to the man that can, and Peter Baldwin set them up again and now all is well in the camp, and yes 'they' had messed with it as the mixture was well out. It now idles correctly, revs nice and smooth and goes like the clappers.

So next time I'll book it into the garage near him for the mot, he (Mr  can slacken off the mix to get it through and then reset them after!

But what a pain.........

shouldn't they be set so that it'll pass an MOT, AND produce good power......

Most carbed... cammed motors will fail the emmissions quite badly

our rally car was at 5.00 co at idle and needed a 3.00 to pass

It may have failed... the garage should have told you they had to alter the mixture as yo could have damaged it

It is fair to say some mot testers are "strange" when it comes to performance mods

I did specifically say I wanted to be there when they tested that part but they had the car in before I knew it and once I had done some paperwork in their office the deed was done! However now I know and the same mistake won't be repeated.

It could have done some damage you're right Jim. I think the settings on mine are similar to what you've noted for yours..

It is annoying isn't it? I had similar for my MOT, but with the handbrake setting. I like it fairly loose-ish as it stops the rear brakes from binding . sticking as I don't use my 205 that often. The handbrake still worked perfectly and I always leave it in gear too.

However, thats not good enough for the MOT people and they changed it. The handbrake lever now hardly moves and its like an on/off switch instead of it having a "range" of braking. As I rarely drive the 205 now, it means the rear brakes bind when I first drive it. I would just leave the handbrake off, but I live on a hill and its parked on said hill. Beforehand I put the handbrake on just enough for it to grip and then put it in gear as well. Now I have no choice other than "fully on". <_<
