Weird Starting Problem - Although It Does Start Eventually

Recommended Posts

wildejon

After letting the engine prime I turn on the ignition and (usually only when hot) I find that all I get is a click... If I wiggle the key back and forwards a bit (between ignition on and starter on) eventually the engine turns over and she fires up.

I'm not sure if this is a wiring problem or the starter motor on its last legs... Any ideas?

Thanks

check how many volts you're getting to the solenoid first

Mine did this, was the starter motor so that was my soloution, but obviously check voltage as said. :D

Happens all the time to mine, i just live with it now although apparently the best approach is to fit a later model starter from an XU engined 306.

Might be worth checking/replacing/bypassing the brown multiplug (do a search) it helped mine a bit, doesn't do it as often now.

Also worth checking the earth straps near the area.

Don't waste money on a new starter motor, etc. I've had three 205s and this has been an issue with all of them. One of the wires on the brown multiplug in the engine bay under the air hoses is far too thin and builds up resistance when the engine is hot. This is the wire that activates the starter which means that not enough voltage is getting through to it when you try starting when the engine is hot.

The best way of losing this problem is to whip off the inlet manifold to gewt to the starter and to run a thicker 30amp gauge wire from the starter to the blue wire on the tachymetric relay in the cockpit under the steering wheel. I did this a few months ago after years of frustration and its never been a problem since.

Good luck.
