Power Steering - Inconsistent Feel

Hi all,

 

I've never been 100% happy with the PAS on my Mi16 - initially the belt was too big and would slip, the correct belt is on now but a leak (that I can't locate) means that the fluid level was a getting bit low and the pump a bit grumbly.

 

I still have the leak (nothing major, maybe 1 teaspoon a day) but even when topped up it just doesn't feel right. There is a lack of self-centering and the level of assistance seems to vary - not very confidence inspiring on quick roads.

 

Do they all do that - or do I have a PAS problem? Alternative could it be a problem with the steering system itself?

 

Edited to say that I've never driven another 205 with the 405 PAS, nor a 405 with the same system. Also the suspension top mounts have only done 15k.
