Dizzy Power Plug Fault

Recommended Posts

wardy18

so the ignition or lack of problem re occurred its ugly head today just as i was given the green light at Todays national hillclimb!

Finally with some luck tracked it to the plug that screws into the dizzy from the ignition amp

the engine would die so I would unscrew this plug then push it on an off a couple times then screw back and happy days fires straight up but it kept happening ALL DAY

I'm still not sure if its the plug or the innards of the dizzy! Hopefull its the plug as its a H&H dizzy and don't fancy havin to start sending it back for repair!

Anyone else had these problems at all?

Yes, I had trouble with this last year. Car would cut out going round left hand bends....after swapping everything in sight & even removing petrol pump to check for water or clag in the tank, I found it was this distributor signal wire.

Have a similar problem now, but not direction related....new wire from Peugeot here in France was over £40....& I had to cut a chunk off the plug to make it fit. Did it solve the problem this time....no.

Grrr.

its just so strange that if i simply unscrew this plug pull off, push back on then re screw it will work fine!!

but i havent managed to find if its the wire and plug or the dizzy itself

i doesnt cut out on the roads

i have a hillclimb this satde and i now have a spare wire/plug so as soon as it cuts out i will change it and soon see if it does it again, if it keep doing it even with new wire then its a dodgy H&H Re-Curved Dizzy and will be sent straight off back to them

ill post my results/findings this weekend

Check/measure dizzy pick up coil signal with a multimeter as described here :

http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?s...104793&st=0

..first with the cable connected i.e. trough cable , hook up the multimeter probes on the cable terminals , and then with the cable disconnected hook up the probes directly onto the pick up coil output terminals on the dizzy ..

Id say it's more likely cable breakdown or connection problem (loosen joint , oxidation on terminals etc.) than pick up coil problem (i've had once pick up coil breakdown but not and never on a 205) as when it fails it'll do so within the few seconds (starts with sudden and severe misfire packed with complete loss of power and shortly afterwards engine dies) and completely stops the car/disables ignition (and on certain management models fueling) system ... and you wont be able to re-start the engine back no matter if cranked for thousand times or waited it to cools down - it'll be dead

thanx for the reply Damir

had another hillclimb yesterday and all was fine until the end of the day, cut out on the second to last run so returned to the pits and fitted the new spare cable, was all good on the last run so thought it was cured but then about to leave the event and drive home it cut out again

unscrewed the plug moved it around a bit then screwed it back in and sure enough fired straight up

what can it be?

can it just be poor connections from the plug to the 2 pins in the dizzy??
