hi

my 205 has recently had the gti6 engine put in but i got stuck in a bit of traffic and the fan cut in but it did not cool the car it just got hotter and hotter till my stop light came on and it went in the red on the gauge. i was wondering is there any other way i can stop my car from doing this. ideas please?

thanks

Have you got an airlock in the cooling system?

Id give it a bleed again to double check.

This happened to my mate the other day, it was the same day he picked t up from the motorsports company.

I think i'll be getting a new rad to help this

Is the fan definately working properly, and running at high speed as the temperature rises? If it's only running on slow speed for whatever reason, there's a good chance that it won't manage to keep the temperature down and the engine will eventually overheat (just slower than if the fan wasn't turning at all)

Do as those above have said. Check the fan is kicking in to full speed and that the rad is in good nick (no missing fins or pin-holes) then give it a good bleed.

If you're losing coolant, another one to check could be the expansion cap. Mine started blowing water out the top so swapped it for another and it's stopped ever since. I recall reading someone on here having problems with a Gti6 and the expansion tank cap.

A quick fix while your in traffic and this happens again, heaters and blowers on full, i've done this a few times in emergencies and it certainly works! Until the problem can be sorted.

Assuming the fan loom's all the same in a Gti6 converted car, you can use the brown fan test plug which should be hanging round the slam panel somewhere. Connect the middle terminal to one of the two (fast/slow) outer terminals and the fan will stay on permanently.

I have been through this myself. Turned out to be the headgasket in my case.

Try searching some of my threads.

Possible reasons could be:

Header tank cap not holding pressure - Have you got much coolant left? Any signs of leaks?

Fan not working properly - Even now with a new fan and alloy rad, mine struggles to pull the temperature down, it does stop the temp rising though.

Air leak (head gasket) or some sort of air lock stopping the coolant flowing

Water pump

Thermostat

I would try blipping the throttle every minute or so, that way the water pump will spin up and push some fresh coolant out of the rad to help cooling and get a fan overide switch fitted. By fitting a switch you can turn the fan on if you know you will be sat for a while before it has chance to get really hot.

To answer everyones questions, which i may aswell as i converted it! The overheating is due to loss of coolant. After seeing the car again yesterday, it looks like the leak is coming from the heater matrix. Doesnt really suprise me as the 1600 engine that i took out had a large headgasket failure, so much so i had to spend an hour flushing the entire cooling system to get rid of the thick brown sludge that had accumulated. This and the extra pressure from the gasket failure has obviously put a bit of a strain on a few things.

There is no slow speed fan resistor on this car as i removed and rewired, i find on some conversions much the same as Garry, the fan can only maintain the temp until you get moving again. It has a higher lb pressure cap so its not coming from there. Also have the cooling circuit wired up properly with no T-pieces so no airlocks can build up, something which has taken me alot of time to perfect, hence why i dont put it about on the forum alot! All of these bits are standard kit for my conversions. <_<

Er, you're welcome! :lol::(

Seriously though i only know through seeing the same or similar problems countless times. A little experience goes a long way and all that...

So if it's the heater matrix as Dan says, then where is it leaking to?

I mean you should be getting soggy carpet and a smell of anti-freeze in the car which is a dead cert that it's the matrix. Kyepan replaced his leaky heater matrix not so long ago (fortunately I've never had to) so maybe useful to you for any tips, unless you're going to take it back to Dan 'The Wizard' Taylor.
