Speedo Cables

Recommended Posts

Guest OlberJ

The speedo cable on my post '90 1.6 is jiggered, would the speedo cable from a pre '90 1.9 fit it?

Is it a hard job to do?

Am gonna give it a bash 2moro but if it definitely wont work I'd appreciate the warning.

Cheers

Olie

I've just done mine. Not too difficult, though best to know where the (hidden) screws are before breaking all the plastic bits and bobs:

under coin tray (lever off via screwdriver under edge)

behind heater controls (pull off)

under (behind) steering wheel

in small hole on side of dash (allen key)

The others should be obvious.

to release, squeeze the cable in the right place (probably broken) at the top and pull out rubber lock-pin at the bottom. Refit is easy reverse fit-mode.

There might be 2 different cable lengths, otherwise should fit.

Rafe.

PS Probably best to chuck away small pile of left-over screws that you can't quite be bothered to fit back in, it'll make some sort of noise anyway.

Now you can throw away all those silly little extra screws that you can't be bothererd to put back in ;) .

No av had the dash off before to fit the white dials and all the screws are back in place.

The speedo is bouncy though, think the end bit that goes into the dash may be a lil bent, would that cause the speedo needle to bounce?

It's only at low speeds, further up it smooths out a lot.

You can change the speedo cable without taking the dash apart, except for the lower tray under the steering wheel. If you can squeeze you fingers through the steering column or use long plier you can remove and replace the cable in the clocks through there.

I changed mine recently and after a couple of weeks of having a nice smooth speedo needle it began to bounce again.

Any ideas?

You should be able to disconnect the cable and still drive the car to check the new cable drive. If that is fine it must either be the routing (check it's all 'natural'), or some dirt (try blowing up ends with air compressor), or the potentiometer, ie the needle mechanism, is failing (unlikely).

Courage,

bouncy speedo is normally an indication that the cable is getting too hot or theres oil getting into it..

if u change it, id move it away from right under the exhaust downpipe <--- what an ingenius design <_<

There are two different Throttle bodie designs.. One with white pastic and one with black plastic. The cables are not interchangeable... (or are they?)
