Diesel To Mi16?

Recommended Posts

Wrighty_1988

Hello, for my 21st my dad is going to let me have a project car. A 205 Junior 1.8 diesel in Yellow has come up in the paper, its exactly the same as my first car which was a 1.1 in yellow. Im thinking about getting this car and converting it into a mi16. Is this car a good base to do the conversion, it wont be too stupidly hard would it?, im also thinking about running the mi16 on carbs. Any advice would be much appreciated, i dont mind doing lots of work and buying bits its getting the enjoyment out of it. Thanks alot.

It is certainly possible, but it has to be said that the conversion is much easier if you start with a GTI- starting with a diesel for example will just mean you end up having to source and fit a lot of GTI parts to do the conversion- for example, fuel tank and pump, front suspension subframe and arms, rear torsion bars, front legs, brakes etc. Up to you really, but the price of a mechanically tired but with good body 205 GTI won't be much difference to your 205 diesel at a guess, and as you are converting it you will replace most of the tired parts.

Am I right in saying the turbo diesel 205s had many GTI parts such as same subframe etc, whereas the n/a diesel 205 did not?
