Group N Exhausts

Recommended Posts

dave_gti

Im getting bodies on my 205 soon, so i gonna change my back box before it goes in, ive never liked the magnex on it and it sounds like its exploded inside the back box.

After doing some research on the forum, it seems the group n is the best, but it seems most have got it from DES Developments, but as you all know they are no longer trading (Does anyone know why?). So where is the best place to get one?

Group N certainly isn't the best. They're just cheapo exhausts for the 8 valve rally cars, designed to be thrown away after a race or two rather than last any length of time. I think the DES system is a little better than the Peugeot sport one, I've never had one though.

What engine is it?

Try Miles, he had some exhausts on his stand at Pugfest.

Oh right, i thought they were supposed to be amongst the best. Im sure that DES didnt do any modifications, just fitted it.

Its for a mi16 engine, ive had the manfiold back custom made, so i just need a back box really.

Neal's systems were his own design to suit most applications, it was easier to call them by "group N" and "group A" than to say "2 box system for 8 valve engine revving to 7k and roughly 160 bhp and stay within MSA noise regs" :D they simply ceased trading as he wasn't enjoying the work coming through.

Miles does an exhaust for Mi16's.

Miles' are just mild steel too aren't they? If you're wanting something permanent you need stainless.

As said I do both,

It's always catch 22, Mild steel rusts and Stainless chucks the baffles out like Magnex to name a few

Group N is a term that always makes me chuckle. Look it up, it means standard.

I've heard that before, thing is it just isn't true. My group n dampers are nowhere near standard and group n exhausts are a hell of a lot louder than standard.

Not standard, but within a given variance of standard spec and in some ways very restricted, and others very unrestricted.

Basically controls the spec of the vehicles to give a levelish playing field.

It does not mean standard by any means.

No, but it means that a "group N" exhaust system will be designed for a 1.6 or 1.9 8V with a fairly low spec'd engine. :P

The proper PTS group N exhaust is developed for the original 1.6 GTI with 105bhp, at a push I'd guess the 115bhp engine but when the 1.6 engine is built to the closest tolerance spec of a standard production 1.6 GTI, it can put out near 130bhp imo on this exhaust.

That same spec of engine is probably better than some tuners have sold as a specced up rebuilt engine with a cam. :)

Graham.

The std Phase 2 system is a good upgrade on any Phase 1 or 1.5 as it's a larger bore, The group n is a very badly used term and I try and avoid it as it's only rally based and nothing to do with track or circuit car's, If a part if upgraded then you should know what too

There was a time when referring to a Grp N exhaust that you would be talking about the PTS system designed for an 8v. Then there were a few copies, made in mild steel and pretty much the same design. Then the term was popping up everywhere, so it's kind of a pointless label for an exhaust system.
