Which Brakes?

Recommended Posts

dave_gti

After my poor pug had been abandoned for months i taken it our for a run planning to put it back to daily use, but the discs are now warped.

Its fitted with GTI6 Calipers, and ill be sticking a 309 rear beam on it soon, so im hoping for opinions on good discs and pads to use for fast road use. Ive had a look on the bay and front discs vary from 60-150 for a pair, is it worth paying a lot extra or isnt there all that much difference?

I'm not sure about discs but pad wise, Mintex are supposed to be pretty good.

I've also heard Batfink talking about these new RC5 Plus's coming out which are supposed to be as good as the RC5 minus screeching sounds (not sure if these fit 306 Calipers).

I had the same dilema a while back :D

I ended up going for mintex 1144s from miles and cheapy eBay CRN groved disks. My brakes are fantastic now (for fast road) and I don't regret the cheap disks at all.

I'm running 1.9 front calipers and drums on the back with el cheapo shoes (soon to be rear disks once 309 beam is built, I will be going with oe spec ferodos for the rear then)

Std discs, Ferodo Premier's are fine for road and mild track use. £13-odd on trade from Helfrauds. Spend a little extra on the fluid and some braided lines.

Do you have any experience with the eBay jobby braided lines ?

No but i wouldn't touch them, eXact? or similar, or anything from pgac_Rich. Go to Miles or stick with the known brands, Goodridge etc.

Standard discs & pads are more than suited for fast road & even track work, they don't do that much work to get over heated imo.

If you are fitting rear discs you don't need the flexi on the radius arm to the caliper.

Just run a solid copper pipe right to the caliper like Pug do on the later 306 etc instead from the flexi round the beam tube.

The rear caliper doesn't move much & the solid still allows more than movement enough for this.

I've swapped my car to this set up recently & won't be going back.

Graham.
