Tps Needed?

hi all, i was going to run megasquirt ecu but i heard most tuners wont touch them or map them, therefore i am going for standard mi16 loom for my 205 mi16 on r1 bike carbs with petert inlet cam regrind and key. i would like the 3 row ecu as i heard are better. i have a sensor ontop of the fly wheel which is connected to sweet f.a! what is this and does it play a part in setting up tps? or tdc?. i have no sensors on my r1 carbs for the tps so how would i go about wiring it? also any comments on megasquirt and advantages if any over mi16 ecu would be helpful. thanks for reading guys

What engine are we talking about here?

 

On the Mi16 the sensor is mounted in the gearbox & is the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) which is needed for the engine to run, with it disconnected it won't start.

 

If its on an 8v then its not used except for when its plugged into the Peugeot diagnostics machine for an accurate rpm reading & nothing else.

 

TPS is a Throttle Position Sensor which fits to your carbs or throttle bodies for fuel enrichening as you move towards WOT.

thats not correct, the only 8v which don't use the CAS are the smaller TU or the Jetronic-Models. The GTI with Motronic do use the CAS-Sensor! And this diagnostic sensor looks different and has an other position.

 

you can say that the motronic on 8v and 16v is nearly the same except for the additional knock sensor and idle valve. everything else is 100% identical.

 

also its not only for rpm-reading, its for ignition-settings. especially on the xu-engines its hard to use a stroboscope to set the ignition.

I know the motronic uses the CAS sensor but if its unplugged & bolted to the engine above the flywheel then it makes me suspect its a Jetronic system (like the majority of UK 205 GTI's) but that is why I asked for clarification on what engine the op is asking about.

 

Not all the motronic systems have the knock sensor (ML4.1 doesn't) but the main difference on the M1.3 between 8v & 16v is the 16v uses the ICV but the 8v still has an SAD.

 

AFM's are the same & so are the TPS (which in this instance is merely an open closed switch nt a fully functioning TPS).

I don't think your plan will work very well. You will need the crank angle sensor for use with the 3 row loom and ECU. However, you'll also need an air flow meter (impossible with carbs), if you want a decent ignition curve. The AFM is used to sense the engine load. Without it, you'll only get a basic curve, which although is drivable, will result in poor fuel economy and performance.

 

With TB's or carbs, you need some type of aftermarket management which will sense engine load either from the throttle position or the inlet manifold pressure.
