Rev Counter Wiring

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with my rev counter on a 1985 205 with Mi16 engine. It worked intermitently for a year and now doesn't work at all, I guess this is a loose connection. Is it attached to the gear box or something else? When I did a search there seemed to be mention of the coil but wasn't sure if this is relevent to the Mi16 or the GTi. I have the 205 and 405 haynes manuals and can't find any mention of the rev counter in either, just the speedo. I'm pretty good at following directions but I have no idea where to start with wiring. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers, Paul

You should find a white 2 pin plug in the loom coming off the coil. One is a yellow, switched live which powers the ECU, the other should be green (usually 2 wires going into 1) which at some point after that becomes grey. It goes to one of the pins on the 5 pin brown multi plug under the dash.

I would suspect that unless your rev counter (often referred to as the tacho - which is how it may be written in the Haynes manual) is FUBAR'd then you've just got a break in that line somewhere. The tacho signal is coil generated yes.

Not sure whether it will be the same but when using the standard engines the tacho's are fused, check it in the Haynes its listed in there somewhere which fuse it is. If i find a haynes ill post it up for you
