Does any body know if Corsa b,c and d electric steering columbs are ok for a 205 conversion or is one better than the other or if there all the same.

Any help much appreciated

Im on with this conversion at the mo, still not finished but will let you know once done. As far as Im aware there all different fittments on the end of the UJ. Apart from that there all roughly the same. There not a easy job to fit but doable.

REALLY don't wanna sound dumb; but why do this?

I understand how a steering rack will make a difference, but why change the column with what appears to be quite a bit of effort? Am I missing something? What's the pay-off please?

EDIT: Just spotted the word 'electric' above. Does this mean the power steering works the column instead of fitting PAS rack? (Just trying to show I'm thinking about this and not being a complete dork)

Exactly that Rich, they have an electric motor as part of the column.

don't know how the Corsa b/c differ though, maybe a scrapyard hunt with a tape measure time.

think this is a Corsa C item.

after doing three counties stages yesterday at smeatharpe my arms chest and stomach were killing cos of the endless 90 degree corners. too much going on at once, braking finding first gear and trying to steer at the same time

This is a brilliant idea - I'd be interested to see any progress on this; the only problems I see are for those with more standard road cars it's all a tight squeeze there already with the indicator stalks etc bolted tothe existing column.

i remember reading about this type of conversion a while a go, dont you need a box of tricks to tell the column what speed your traveling?

A Corsa 'B' column is just a standard electric motor built on the column. The Corsa 'C' is speed sensitive, and has an ecu bolted to the lower part of the column. Usually, with the 'C' series conversion, you have a small box with reostat in it in order to adjust the sensitivity of your steering from very light to slightly heavy. The Corsa 'B'' is the easiest conversion as it has a lot less electronics to fiddle about with.

Mmm sounds like a plan?

of what I've read briefly the corsa c has a uses a speed sensor for variable assistance I think, so should be straightforward to implement and adjust.

I think a fairly common mod on rwd escorts?

I considered one of these for a while but in the end went for a Xsara VTS rack with a Saxo/106 electric PAS pump which works very well and is less effort to fit.

Im putting a EPAS coras rack on my 205 rally car as I car'nt hack the tight corners fast enough especially with a plated diff. I will be fitting mine in the next week or so, after this I will be making & selling a conversion kit for the racks. Bonus of this system for me is less to go wrong with it compared to hydrolic, probably lighter overall plus does not drain BHP from the engine like a belt pump.

Electrical systems load the alternator by about the same amount, the power has to come from somewhere.

Iv just helped a mate fit this on his rally (not a 205) and the steering "feel" is very bad you get a strange delay just off center im told its something you get use to but im not so sure.

Jimmer at the weekend, steering not too much of a handicap, lying seventh overall and second in class against some VERY quick escorts, prior to terminal engine failure :D

The Corsa C units dont need a speed sensor to get working properly, as mentioned you can buy an adjuster box which basically acts as the speed sensor so you can turn the steering weight up and down. From talking to my Vauxhall mad mate, the C columns are more reliable than the previous models too.

I know of one in a 205 rally car.I never really looked too much at it as I am not really bothered about power steering, but from what the lad the owns the car says it is easy to do,don't think he had any problems with it at all really.

yep both my mates have them done in their 205s must be over 3 years now, used corsa b column and used a hockley modified control unit fitted with a dash mounted variable resistor to adjust how much power assistance you want, combined with a quick rack its brill and never had any bother since

Does a Fiat Punto not use the same/similar unit as the Corsa?

Just a thought as if not it may be an easier install.
