Tran-x Lsd Problem?

Recommended Posts

GTI6BOY

Just purchased a brand new tran-x diff and had some troubles fitting it?

Everything went ok till putting the drive shafts back in...they would not go in for s*it?

After a bit of club hammer treatment they went in but now they make a terrible noise

When turning the steering wheel the passenger drive shaft bangs and seems to catch on something inside the box

Also while driving the diff bangs and trys to pull the steering wheel out of your hand?

Im not a newb with diffs and own a ZF and a Kaaz but have never had any problems like this

Any ideas please

I presume you have checked the diff cover and housing for clearance before fitting it? Most need a little modding beforehand.

all the relevent ally has been ground away and the diff spins freely.

It sounds like the noises mine make because of the diff preload etc. It really does make a hell of a racket (mainly through the passenger shaft too), and pulls at the steering. Its how its meant to be though. Cant say i had any problems fitting the shafts on mine though, slid straight in.

New shafts time, usually have to put in new ones with plate diff, as even a small bit of wear in the shafts will make a racket!!

Get new rather than recon ones though I had issues with that.

Not the shafts mate...they are brand new and i have got them to go in easily now by filing the splines a little where you chop 10mm off the end of the shaft for a vts box

Taylorspug - The noises are all the time, straight lines, very slight bends at high speed its like the diff is just about to fall out. I so wish i stuck with diffs i know and not tried something new

Basically if you turn the wheel to say 11 o'clock while driving it banks and clunks like it would on full lock with no diff oil

I have just read on another thread that Hilgy said with a tran-x diff you dont need to chop down a gti shaft but this shaft has been due to the vts diff...now could the splines on the shaft not be engaging in the splines in the diff correctly?

Yours does sound a bit excesssive tbh. Ive got 'full length' shafts in my car, thats a Tran-X with a Xsara box, and the NS shaft does poke out a bit more than it should. But it doesnt weep oil and the splines are fully engaged so im happy enough. The diff has been in for a good few k's of hard use now without a problem, gearbox oil still looks fresh when i checked it the other week too.

changed the end of the shaft now for a standard end.

took the car and had the tracking done and most of the noise has gone.

only makes noises monovering at low speeds now which all gos away once you start moving

i just find is strange as the 2 diffs i use make no noises what so ever even on full lock at slow speeds?

Are the other two worn out then!?!

The tran X is forcing the wheels to turn at the same speed hence the banging. Obviously once you are in a straight line you get no knocking/banging. Sounds like you have sorted the problem.

depends what the retailer means by brand new, brand new as in freshly made, or brand new as in remanufactured....
