Where To Get Solid Brake Lines From

Recommended Posts

shalmaneser

Anybody know where to get solid brake lines from? I'm upgrading my whole braking system and want to put in some copper lines, mainly because the old lines look like they're going to shear off when i try and undo the flexis.

I guess most motor factors will do it, but i'd like to know if there's anywhere cheap online people have used and recommend - this is all being done on a bit of a budget!

alternatively, if anyone has a flairing kit and copper line I'd be very grateful if you could knock me something up - obviously my gratitude would take the form of beer tokens!

Cheers all

Adam.

ANY motorfactor, and they will be pretty cheap, OR any decent garage often have pipe in stock anf can make up a section for you.

its all pretty cheap anyway, so its hard to find anywhere cheaper, I see you're in Hampshire, I'd go and see Miles, I've heard many good things about his brake lines!

I asked a local garage to make me some, very cheap. Like Welshpug says go and visit Miles.

If you have a decent or access to a decent flaring tool, the whole setup will cost £15 plus an hour of your time.

Often the cheap tools (like most cheap tools!) do a s*it job, and I wouldn't use anything like that on something so critical.

Make you own up as it is easyer enough and when you look at your nice shiney brake lines you can be proud and say I done that.

Got it done by a local garage, got stung for bloody £27! Could have bought the kit at that price, i hate living in the south where people rip you off left right and centre.

Still, all together now...

I like big brakes I cannot lie...

Old gammy brakes

New shiney brakes

Got the big brake upgrade kit off Ebay; came with the original invoice for £160 odd quid. I'd be livid paying that price for them, the amount of fettling needed was untrue. luck i got them for £25 including postage then really!

you can certainly notice the difference compared to my old brakes. A lot more grabby and you can lock the wheels in the dry now if you're that way inclined. Main reason for the upgrade was the worn sliders on the 1.9 calipers, got a pair of new 1.6 calis for £35 a pop off the bay as well, from AEP who I would have no problem recommending - very quick service and the calipers are top notch, i think they're new not recons as well, which is nice.

Some shuddering under braking though, although I put this down to the pads needing to wear in properly - I had to remove a lot of friction material from one of the pads on each caliper, and I doubt i've done it exactly square, so hopefully once they're all worn i they'll be a bit better. still very happy overall, mind.

yeah hadn't quite finished at that stage, I knew someone would point that out!

and yeah, i know about the pads...They'll do for now!

Incidentally welshpug, is that a valve in your avatar?! I've spent the last few months assuming it was a gear lever in an old truck or something!

yep, a gti6 inlet valve

those pads work well in that caliper, a friend used to use them on his 106 rallye, now moved onto the yellow ones in his 1.6 205 rally car :)

It's recently occured to me that I can run the grooves running 'inwards' as the wheel turns (as they're currently fitted), or 'outwards', any idea as to which is best?

may just try them the other way round out of interest, but if anyone knows better then please let me know. It's currently troubling me as I reckon that they're the 'wrong' way round ATM, would be interesting to hear opinions!

I had some Pagid discs fited to my old Fiat Coupe 20vt, they came with marking stamped on the disc saying 'Aggressive' if the grooves went forwards like yours are or 'normal' if the grooves went backwards. I had mine fitted to Agressive, they were noisy in use but bloody good, never had a hint of brake fade on track
