power wise, no there'll be no real difference in the peak numbers. Across the revs however, the extra control and acuracy of fueling will see you big gains in drivabilty, power delivery, torque, and economy. ITBs all the way. Wouldn't touch megasquirt with a long pole personally

Dont want this to sound elitist at all. I've also done many builds on a budget so i totally understand, but those who dont see a problem/limitation with megasquirt have usually not used anything better. Omex knocks MS into a cocked hat (I can say that freely now, i dont work for Omex any longer ;) ) the control difference is HUGE. Once you've used the best, you dont want to go back

yeah you get what you pay for i suppose .but this is my first aftermarket ecu so couldnt justify b*llocksing anexpensive one up so ms it is

I've heard very few good things about MegaSquirt, and apart from the fact most mappers won't touch it, I wouldn't either.

Regarding buggering it up, proper ECU's are far harder to damage than a MS as well.

the trouble is, it will likely put you off aftermarket entirely. Proper ECUs have warranty, and technical backup

Must confirm the above, Most mapper's I know again won;t touch MegaSquit or any version of it mainly because it's DIY and can have loads of issues and getting and help if from a PDF file (I guess) from the web

A aftermarket ECU is a good investment as much as an investment can be on a car, it's one of the few parts that keep's it's value for years.

And oh yes, ITB's all the way, almost fit and forget where carb's are a pain and finding someone to set them up again can be difficult

The best advice is choose who's going to map it first and then take their advice, as long as it isn't one of the dealer only systems! Mapping standard vary hugely though, so that's a difficult choice to someone not in the know. DTA S40 is the best value IMO and my personal favourite simply for the ease of use and functionality at the price. Emerald means you can use Dave Walker, a bit of a trek for you, but he's consistently good and the K3 ECU has good functionality for the money. Omex generally works very smoothly, even if the map isn't spot on and has a very loyal following by those that prefer it, but it's relatively pricey in terms of functionality and an experienced DTA user will produce as good a map on the S40.

Don't forget the loom cost needs to be accounted for, £200-350 depending on supplier.

i'm for mega squirt really they all have there pros and cons there are not many ecu's you can get that will offer you so many features for under 200 pounds.

while the out the box point is very valid and mega squirt does need more tweaking, in the long run it can offer you much more flexibility imo. no license fees, no recurring cost for upgrades.

with it been an open source solution there are many more people willing to help and share there troubles, experiences and solutions.

from the mapping point of view that can be an issue, but there are people out there. :)

carbs may be cheaper (secondhand) initially but injection will produce better results hands down

I have mapped megasquirt (MS2), but it took us nearly two days to get all the right matching software and firmware sorted out; which meant it cost more. The end result was OK, but no better than that, if I spent more time using it, it would probably get better obviously, but I'm not convinced it works out much cheaper in the end and it certainly doesn't have the resale value of a regular programmable system.
