Cranking Oil Pressure...

Recommended Posts

madspikes

I've just build up my new engine over that last couple of days and with it sat nicely in the car, I'd like to test for oil pressure. I havent finished making the loom up yet so cant start the engine, so was wondering what kind of oil pressure should I expect but just cranking it over on the starter motor, with no plugs in?

Thanks

Mad. :)

first of all, its wise to let the engine crank for about 30-60 seconds the first time you start it or after an oil change, without letting it start (f.e. pulling the ignition plug) until the oil pressure builds up.

you cannot see what the pressure you have because the instruments are turned off during cranking, but you can see if you have oil pressure. after you turn the key back, the red light should be off for about 0.5-1seconds, then you know that you have a pressure.

during cranking the pressure is relatively small, just a bit over the switching point of the warningswitch which is, afaik, 0.8 or 0.9 bar

indeed that would be true if my pug was wired as it left the factory, which its isnt!! ;)

We saw around 1bar of oil pressure on cranking, so cant be bad.

Thanks for the info.
