Setting Timing

Recommended Posts

i need to set the timing from scratch on my 1.6 gti b6d engine, there is a point for locking the head but not on the crank, so if i lock the head up, what/which pistons need to be at tdc or is there a better way?

you need to fit the alternator pulley to time up the bottom end iirc.

there's a mark on the bottom crank sprocket and a corresponding mark on the oil seal carrier at about 90 degrees clockwise, many replacement belts will have a line you place on this mark.

you will need the Auxiliary belt pulley on if you want to lock it.

there's also a mark on the cam pulley, can't remember what that lines up with apart from a line on most timing belts, there is the 10mm locking hole.

I've just got to the point of setting the timing, the whole engine has been apart so I'm starting from scratch. The pulley is on so I can use the timing locking holes to line up, however there are several holes on the alternator pulley! The obvious hole seems to have the pistons all at the same height! Is this how a XU9 engine is set up? Or am I using the wrong hole :o easily done :D

The hole Is in the main pulley on crank the one that drives alternator belt,10mm hole lines up with a slot in seal carrier as stated above it is at about 12 o'clock if memory serves correct. The hole is the one that is smaller and is prouder than other holes in pulley the only one that will fit a 10mm pin.

The cam is timed using a 10mm locking pin hole in sprocket kinds up with hole in rear of head near head bolt with spacer on

Ok. Looks fine! There are 3 other holes in the crank pulley that aren't raised, one of which in TDC. The smaller of the raised holes which is 10mm is actually all 4 pistons in a line. Anyway, I lined up the one raised 10mm hole and put the belt on with a bit of tension, spun the engine round by hand twice and everything still lines up so all should be good!

Was it timed with all 4 inline? My xu9 8 valve definately times all 4 inline halfway down bore.ripped it apart today so it is still very fresh in memory.

Yep all four in line, mines all set up now but thinking logically about the process all 4 in line makes sense as you can line up the timing holes, whip off the cam belt and set things like clearances without issue of valve piston contact then line up the cam pulley timing hole again, belt back on and job done! Tensioned mine up and everything seems ok! My next job is to get the gearboxed serviced then all back into the car. Still bet it doesn't work first time but we'll soon see whether the timing is right!!
