Ignition Problem

Recommended Posts

Zed

Edit: Forgot to mention this is a 1900 mi16 running mi16 loom/management.

Ok, this is probably a familiar problem and if i could afford I would replace every part of the ignition system, but at the moment im jobless and absolutely broke. So any help to wittle down the problem would be greatfully received.

So, basically the ignition started cutting out completely when the revs go up towards 5k, under this it didnt have a problem and ive done a couple of 180mile round trips in the past week thats its done no problem.

After returning from a trip of 80 miles the other day i went back to the car and it wouldnt start (not even trying to fire), left for 2 hours and it started fine and drove.

So, it could either be the Coil, Ignition Amp, Distributer, HT Leads.

I cant afford to play the guessing game and just start replacing things so was wondering if anyone had any testing guides to rule out certain items ?.

Sitting in the car earlier and holding the revs up I could hear the engine slightly missing fairly constantly above 3k.

Im not sure if this helps but the rev counter shoots down when it cuts out and the engine backfires loudly if i punch the throttle up high.

Any help greatfully received.

If the rev counter is dropping out then the coil is not being fired, as the rev counter gets its signal from the coil. Therefore you can discount the HT side of things.

First of all, check and double check every electrical connection. My Mi was doing almost exactly the same thing and it turned out to be a loose nut on the starter motor where the battery cable connects...it vibrated just right at a certain rpm that electical noise caused the ECU to reset itself, and the engine would cut out for a fraction of a second like that, with no other symptoms.

If everything is ok, then it will either be the ignition amp (most likely), the crank position sensor, or the ECU if you are unlucky. I might have a spare ign amp knocking around somewhere if you need one.

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago, engine cutting out at high revs. It turned out to be the crank position sensor. Your best bet is to see if you could find someone to lend you known working parts and work your way through the system.

I've had the same problem on my Mi16, although i'm running carbs.

I removed all the ignition components and had them tested at H&H Ignition solutions, every thing was fine. all parts were refitted and i also cleaned the earth points.

Not had the problem since.

The chap at H&H told me to check the ignition switch too as they can become faulty (sometimes)
