Mi16 - Replacing Cam Oil Seal

Recommended Posts

Dave_McC

As title, my Mi16 has developed a small oil leak from the cam oil seal behind the PAS drive pulley. What's the best way of loosening the PAS pulley bolt - do I need to remove the cam cover to get a spanner on the flats on the cam, or remove the cam belt cover and lock the cam pulley off using a screwdriver locked against the head casting somewhere? I'd prefer to avoid removing the cam cover unless I have to.

Also, what's the recommended way of extracting the old seal? (when I removed the last one I was stripping the whole engine so removed the cams, and fitted the new seals to the cams before installing cams in head)

Thanks

Dave

Iirc, when I did mine, it was a case of screwdriver in starter/flywheel, and job done. to get old one out use a screw driver, push one side in and pull the other out with a sharp pointy thing

Remove cam cover. Use appropriate sized spanner to hold hex. on exhaust cam and loosen retaining bolt. Loosen the six socket headed cap screws slightly on the end cam cap and you'll be able to easily pry out the cam seal.

Definitely don't use the cam belt to hold the exhaust cam via a locked flywheel!

i think haynes mentiones using a sharp screw to screw into the old seal then use a pair of pliers on the screw head to pull the old seal out

Thanks all - think I'll be following PeterT's advice - really not very kind on the cambelt to use it to hold the cam. Also like the idea of loosening off the end capheads on the cam carrier to ease removal - I've found some oil seals can be complete bastards to remove.
